‘Oldies’ Night at Rosie O’Grady’s – Wed 9th May

The inspiration behind this night was a short video put together by some of the original first ascensionists, and originators of CAWA, Dave James and ‘Mac’ McArthur of that CAWA had been up to in year 1976.  Many of the climbers in the video, and some new comers, are still around and climbing, self nicknamed the ‘Oldies’, and they’ve offered to come along and talk about the exciting discovery of new crags such as Churchman’s Brook, the flurry of new routes and first ascents and the history behind the development of climbing in WA.

So come along and share a piece of WA climbing history, find out how ‘Pink Knickers’ (13) at Churchman’s Brook got it’s name, and find out the secret to being able to climb till you’re 80!

Venue is Rosie O’Grady’s in Northbridge, with a 6:30pm arrival for a 7pm start.

  1. Hi Kate.
That should be Paul (not Peter) Wopereis.
He lives in Nelson – NZ now, with his Peruvian wife and 2 boys.
Hope you all had a great evening. Sorry I couldn’t make it.
    Mike

  2. Hi Rhys,
Your Dad told some great stories, as did Mac and Mike Adams and the others. It was a great night, and fantastic to hear what climbing was like in WA in the early days… Home made nuts, hand-drawn guides and great comradery! All celebrated and remembered with a coconut! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read the book your Dad put together of WA climbing stories called ‘Climb When Ready’, it’s a hoot!).
    Cheers,
    Kate Swain
    CAWA Vice President
