Wilyabrup trip: Friday 10th – Sunday 12th April.

Wilyabrup

The warm sunny days perfect for climbing will soon be coming to an end for the next few months so it’s time to head to the coast for some sea cliff climbing. CAWA has a trip planned to Wilyabrup from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th April. Located 26km NW of Margaret River, it’s not too far for a weekend trip from Perth.

Wilyabrup is one of the biggest and best known crags in the region, stretching around 400m along a small terrace above the wave line overlooking the Indian Ocean. With rock pools and small beaches close by, it’s a beautiful place to climb.

The climbing style is quite varied with lots of face climbs, small roofs and even a few cracks. The climbs are mostly trad or mixed lines requiring a full rack of wires and camming devices. Top ropes can be easily set up in places. Bob’s Hollow is also not far away and a popular sport climbing crag. Check out the West Australian Rock guide book for more info.

There is also no shortage of wineries, breweries and cafes in the area.

We will be staying at a campground not far from Wilyabrup. To register for this trip, please email me at martynd@climberswa.asn.au and I’ll send you a registration form. Any questions please feel free to email. Once registrations are received, we will provide further information and do our best to assist with car pooling.

Please note that CAWA trips are a benefit for members. Non-members who are interested in coming can join online here .

CAWA is not able to provide training on trips, so all climbers must be independent participants who are completely responsible for themselves. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent, guardian or other responsible person to accompany them.

For further information about trips, please follow this link: CAWA Trips

Looking forward to seeing you there

Mt Frankland Trip: Labour Day Long Weekend 27 February- 2 March 2015

Mt Frankland

The warm sunny summer days will be starting to fade away before we know it. In a couple of months it will be getting colder and the rain will arrive at our door step, so it’s time climbers start thinking about heading south to climb and make the most of the beautiful weather. The Labour Day long weekend CAWA has a trip planned to Mount Frankland in the picturesque Karri forest north of Walpole, 400km south of Perth.

For the uninitiated, Mt Frankland is a 422 m high granite dome set in the middle of a beautiful karri forest, conveniently located in the Mt Frankland National Park. The main and most worthwhile climbing is on the main dome. Best known for its slab and face climbing, you will also find the odd crack as well. It involves multi-pitch climbing with a mix of bolted and traditional. You can just do the single pitch stuff but will run out of climbs fairly quickly and it is only possible to top rope a few climbs from the bottom. To get a better idea of the climbing, check out the West Australian Rock or the South Coast Rock guidebook and the newer climbs are detailed on the CAWA web at the link Mt Frankland New Climbs or at On-line Guides/Mt Frankland.

Camping is not allowed at Mt Frankland but comfortable sites with a very basic camp kitchen and drop toilet are not too far away. Water is generally available but this is variable and you should be totally self sufficient. BYO firewood. The road off the main highway is dirt and can be in variable condition, though always 2WD friendly.

It’s always a great weekend away and a good chance to meet other climbers. There are lots of other outdoor activities in the area including kayaking bushwalking and mountain biking. If you intend to come on the trip send me an email at melissak@climberswa.asn.au and I’ll send you a registration form. Please fill in the form and send it back to me.

Please note that CAWA trips are only open to current members. Non-members who are interested in coming can join online via our website.

All participants need to be ‘independent participants’. This means you are responsible for your own safety. Due to legal and liability issues, CAWA does not provide training on trips. If you are an inexperienced climber, then have a chat to some of the more experienced people you know and see if they are planning to attend.

Cheers

CAWA Winter Dinner – Saturday 23 August 2014

a

Inspired by MasterChef, the CAWA committee is preparing a winter feast of epic proportions. Luscious lamb, succulent steak, fabulous fish and vibrant veggies…followed by delectable desserts.

Are we awesome or what? Totally. But we do have a confession to make. As amazingly talented as we are, for this occasion we have enlisted the help of the crew at The Oxford Hotel in Leederville.

We’ve reserved a lovely little spot with a fireplace, perfect for a winter get together.

A new menu is due for release shortly and we have been assured that there will be more vegetarian options. Flexibility to cater for the gluten challenged is already offered. You can view the current menu here: http://www.theoxford. com.au/cafes/cafe-menu.html. If you keep an eye on their website, the new menu will make an appearance before our dinner date.

So come out of hibernation and join us for a cosy evening, telling tall stories about your climbing (and other) exploits by the fire.

This is a member event. So hurry up and join or renew your CAWA membership now! Places are limited.

While this is a member event, partners are most welcome – yours, someone else’s or a random stranger. We don’t mind.

RSVP is essential. If we exceed the limits of the reserved area then we will need time to rearrange seating.

Please let us know as soon as possible but by Thursday 7 August 2014 latest.

Email your rsvp or any queries to Melissa: melissak@climberswa.asn.au and we will then provide further details.

We look forward to seeing you there!
