FREE Skills Night for CAWA Members at Adventure Out

P1010544DX

Keen to learn some tips and tricks to make you the most sought after belay bunny ever?

Want to know more about trad climbing but too afraid to ask?

Not sure how to use your equipment?

Do you know how to self rescue?

Does rope handling feel more like a B & D session gone wrong?

Experienced but looking to improve your knowledge?

Adventure Out (providers of outdoor training and activities) are very kindly hosting a skills night exclusively for CAWA members. It will be an informal evening where we will cover a smorgasbord of topics including but not limited to belaying, knots, self rescue, trad gear, correct use of equipment, rope handling and safety. There will also be some dodgy bits of gear on display to show you what to avoid.

The purpose of the evening is to give all climbers an opportunity to learn or review skills, ask questions and build on knowledge, including advanced techniques. It is therefore suited to everyone from novice to experienced climbers keen to do it better. Climbing, that is. We can’t help with the other stuff.

No matter how long you climb for, you will never know everything (even if you think you do). There is always something new and interesting to learn and who doesn’t want a broader skill set? It’s right up there with having a bigger rack.

It would be great to have  some of the crusty ‘old’ climbers come along and share some stories. Who knows, you might even be tempted to retire that twenty year old rusty cam in favour of some shiny new fandangled bit of gear. Or you can just bring your old relics for show and tell. Either way, a mix of experience always makes for an entertaining evening.

Everyone is welcome to bring whatever food and drink they would like (including a few beers). There is a fridge available for use.

There will also be an opportunity for CAWA members to access AO climbing courses at discounted rates.

When: Wednesday 2 December 2015

Time: 6 pm onwards for about 3-4 hours

Where: Adventure Out, Unit 5/324 Orrong Road, Welshpool

What to bring: Your usual climbing gear. BYO food and drink.

Don’t have a rack? Don’t panic! Just bring whatever you do have.

This event is one of the many benefits of being a CAWA member. If you are not yet a member, but keen to come along, joining is easy. Just follow this link: Become a CAWA member today.

RSVP essential by Friday 27 November 2015. Please send to denar@climberswa.asn.au.

Look forward to seeing you there.

CAWA Mt Frankland Trip: Friday 25 September – Monday 28 September 2015

As we head into August, it’s time to start thinking about the warm sunny days of spring that will soon be upon us, just perfect for planning climbing trips. CAWA has a trip planned for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend to Mount Frankland in the picturesque Karri forest north of Walpole, 400km south of Perth.

For the uninitiated, Mt Frankland is a 422 m high granite dome set in the middle of a beautiful karri forest, conveniently located in the Mt Frankland National Park. The main and most worthwhile climbing is on the main dome. Best known for its slab and face climbing, you will also find the odd crack as well. It involves multi-pitch climbing with a mix of bolted and traditional. You can just do the single pitch stuff but will run out of climbs fairly quickly and it is only possible to top rope a few climbs from the bottom. To get a better idea of the climbing, check out the West Australian Rock or the South Coast Rock guidebook and the newer climbs are detailed on the CAWA website at the link Mount Frankland New Climbs.

Camping is not allowed at Mt Frankland but comfortable sites with a basic camp kitchen and drop toilet are not too far away. Water is generally available but this is variable and you should be totally self sufficient. BYO firewood. The road off the main highway is dirt and can be in variable condition, though always 2WD friendly.

It’s always a great weekend away and a good chance to meet other climbers. There are lots of other outdoor activities in the area including kayaking, bushwalking and mountain biking.  We will be keeping a close eye on the weather as Mt Frankland can get a bit damp, even in spring.

Please note that CAWA trips are only open to current members. Non-members who are interested in coming can join online here:  Become a CAWA member.

Due to legal and liability issues, CAWA does not provide training on trips. All climbers must be independent participants who are completely responsible for themselves. If you are an inexperienced climber, then have a chat to some of the more experienced people you know and see if they are planning to attend.

If you have any queries or to register for the trip, please email me at megans@climberswa.asn.au.

CAWA trip to Eaglestone Rock: Friday 28 August – Sunday 30 August 2015

216952_10151191550546181_1468531635_n

Dear CAWA members,

It’s time to grab your winter woollies and pack up your car for a club trip to the Wheatbelt east of Perth. Camping is only a stone’s throw away from where you will be climbing. Your coffee will stay nice and hot on the brief walk to your first climb of the day.

With approximately thirty trad, bolted and mixed routes there is something for everyone. Eaglestone has large granite boulders with good face climbing. Abseil stations are positioned on top of the major boulders. There are a number of fantastic routes including **Wishbone (17), ***Capachow (19), *Old School Leaver (18) and ** Ithica  (22). So be sure to check out your Perth Rock Climbing Guide for route and access information.

Eaglestone now has a long drop toilet, so no need to pack a shovel. However, there are no other facilities or water so you will need to be completely self-sufficient. A guide to what to bring:

  • Cooking & camping gear, including plenty of water
  •  Firewood – there isn’t any to be collected from the ground so we would ask that everyone brings some with them. It’s not an Eaglestone trip without a fire! And it does get very cold at night.
  •  Toilet paper
  • Warm clothing – it’s pretty chilly out there at night and early in the morning
  • You don’t need a 4WD but there is a short section of dirt road, followed by a section of good sand track easily accessible by 2WD.

The Merredin bakery is a must before heading to Eaglestone Rock, with tasty treats to satisfy your climbing hunger.

Registering your interest

Please register your interest now by emailing me at marke@climberswa.asn.au. I will send you a questionnaire to complete as well as more detailed information. I will do my best to assist members to organise car pooling.

Please note that CAWA trips are a benefit for members. Joining online is easy, through the link on the CAWA home page.

Due to legal and liability issues, CAWA does not provide training on trips. All climbers must be independent participants who are completely responsible for themselves. If you are an inexperienced climber, then have a chat to some of the more experienced people you know and see if they are planning to attend.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on the above email.

We hope you can join us on this trip

CAWA Winter Dinner – Saturday 25 July 2015

c

The winter weather is fast approaching, bringing with it cold mornings and rainy days. However, it also brings better friction at the crag, log fires and CAWA’s Winter Dinner.

It will again be held at The Oxford Hotel in Leederville on Saturday 25 July 2015, in a lovely little spot with a fireplace.

If you’re someone who likes to plan ahead, you can view the current a la carte menu here. The menu includes some vegetarian options and there is flexibility to cater for gluten intolerance. Drinks can be purchased directly from the bar.

So come out of hibernation and join us for a cosy evening, telling tall stories about your climbing (and other) exploits by the fire. While this is a member event, please feel free to bring partners – yours, someone else’s or a random stranger. We don’t mind.

Join us for a drink at 6 pm, with seating for dinner at 6.30 pm.

Address: 368 Oxford Street, Leederville

RSVP is essential as seating is limited. Really, this is not a marketing ploy. If we exceed the limits of the reserved area then we will need time to rearrange seating.

Please let us know as soon as possible but by Monday 20 July 2015 at the latest.

Email your RSVP or any queries to Megan: megans@climberswa.asn.au.

The Perth Rock Climbing Guide and spunky new CAWA t-shirts (a must have for any wardrobe) will be available for $25 each.

Not a member but keen to come along? Joining online is quick and easy here: CAWA membership

We would like to encourage everyone to pull out all the stops, dig out your fancy duds and dress up a bit. There is no pressure but it would be lovely to see some of the ladies frock up (and the boys too if you are into that sort of thing) and guys get out of their jeans and into something spiffy (or at least a nice shirt). Let’s make it a bit special.

We look forward to seeing you there!

CAWA Knot Night: Wednesday 20 May 2015

IMG_2449

What on earth is a knot night, you ask?  From 6:30 pm onwards a few of our more experienced climbers will demonstrate how to tie and apply the basic knots commonly used for climbing. This is a practical evening for CAWA members to learn useful skills for the real world. If you are new to outdoor climbing or planning to make the move soon, this informal night is perfect for you. Even if you aren’t ‘new’ but not 100% sure if what you are doing is quite right or you’d like to pick up some handy tips, come and join us. Also an excuse to socialise, we would love to see some of you crusty old rock gods come and impress our newer members with your climbing prowess.

What does any of that have to do with Gesa looking so happy about me cutting her rope? I guess you’ll just have to come along and find out.

Based in the upstairs meeting room of Rosie O’Grady’s Northbridge (205 James Street), pub grub is conveniently available if you are coming straight from work.

There is no set structure for this evening. Everything will be worked through at a suitable pace.

Please note that this training is provided for the benefit of CAWA members and is a FREE event.

Non-members can join online here: CAWA Membership.

What to bring: rope; large locking carabiners and a few non-locking ones; accessory cord and belay device. Don’t panic if you don’t have some of these items. Just bring what you have.

Please bring proof of membership with you: your CAWA membership card or Register Now receipt if you have only just joined.

The Perth Rock Climbing Guide and our awesome new CAWA t-shirts will be available for $25 each.

It would be appreciated if you could bring the exact amount.

Please RSVP to cawa@climberswa.asn.au so that we have an idea of numbers.

Hope to see you there!
