CAWA Kalbarri Fun – June Long Weekend – 1st to 3rd

Kalbarri – the place to breakout your skills on some overhang…, or just enjoy the remoteness of the climbs with your fellow climbers.

CAWA is sending another group of climbers to this outstanding mid-west crag over the Foundation Day Long Weekend – June 1st to 3rd. To get on-board express your interest by emailing me at anthonyb@climberswa.asn.au or txt/call me on 0424 631 869.
CAWA has secured several powered campsites at Anchorage Caravan Park on the edge of town, closest to the Kalbarri National Park.

People are welcome to make their own arrangements, but if you would like to take advantage of a campsite, and the amenities it offers, please get in fast.

Some may make the ‘after-work’ departure and head north on the Friday night – Kalbarri is approximately a 7-8 hour drive, and an early morning departure maybe more your style.

More details will following on any group departure as interest comes in.

On the Sunday night we will enjoy a BBQ together back at camp (and maybe a cold beverage or two!), re-energise and squeeze in a few more climbs on the Monday before returning.

Like most crags, Kalbarri has some climbing for everyone, but also has access to some fantastic hard overhanging sport climbing, in a great location – deep in the gorge. If you want to crank some hard routes before the dead of winter sets in, this could be the trip for you.

Given the remoteness and general access to the crag environment this is not a beginner crag and inexperienced climbers should seek the advice of someone more experienced or team up with a group that have been to the area before.

CAWA trips are a benefit for members. Non-members who are interested in coming can join online at the CAWA website. All those that attend need to be ‘independent participants’. This means you are responsible for your own safety. Due to legal and liability issues, CAWA does not provide training. Again, if you are an inexperienced climber, then have a chat to some of the more experienced people you know and see if they are planning to attend.

CAWA President takes a “hike”……

CAWA President, Tony Brebner, who late last year stood down to have treatment for cancer, is now stepping up and out this month to raise support and much needed funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Tony leaves Perth on Sunday 26th May to hike the Camino De Santiago. It’s an 800km pilgrim trail from St Jean Pied de Port in France, across the Pyrenees and northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela and will take 5 weeks, walking every day….

Affecting many Australian’s every year, Prostate Cancer can be diagnosed early, and support through Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia has been invaluable.

During his time, “out of the office”, Anthony Brandis (CAWA Vice President) will take over as Acting CAWA President.

Learn some handy climbing knots and rope craft

See how to hank a climbing rope quick and easy, bring your own rope if you want to practise.

Bring some prussic cord if you have some. If you have no idea then you should come and learn what it is and how it is used.

There will be some games to play as well.

CAWA Peak Charles Trip

Peak Charles Trip for Easter – Coming?

I’ll be coordinating the trip to Peak Charles this year over the Easter break holiday from Friday 29 March to Monday 1 April (about 3 weeks away). Considering that the travel time is around 7 hours it is anticipated most people will probably be taking either a day off on either side as well.

About Peak Charles

Peak Charles is approximately 900 km from Perth and located 200 km NW of Esperance and provides climbs ranging from 11 to 27 (see guide on this site for more information). We will be using the DEC campsite at Peak Charles. The only facility is a drop toilet and no running water so best bring your own paper . There are no shops, so all attendees need to be TOTALLY self-sufficient and bring all of your own food and water. Access to the area via the least rugged route still involves a dirt road.

Partners & Skill Level

We also need to remind everyone that we are not providers of training, so inexperienced climbers need to team up with someone with adequate experience prior to the trip so as to get the most out of the event.

CAWA Photo Comp Calendars – LIMITED STOCK

There are a few CAWA Photo Comp Calendars still available. Either pick them up at the Rockface or the Hangout.

The calendar features some of the best (but not all!) of the photos from the AGM Photo Competition which was another huge success this year!

Price is $10 each with the dates being from March 2013 to February 2014 to coincide with their release date at the AGM each year.
