    News Autumn 07

As you can see we have started the ball rolling again in 07 and a number of classic routes have been receiving attention. We have been receiving lots of great feedback from climbers far and wide. With the most positive being the “revival” of Wallcliffe from it’s later years slump.

The work has not only been starting to spread, but also the parties involved with the work has increased. There are at least 4 parties getting involved with re-bolting routes not only in Margaret River, but also in Perth and hopefully as far afield as Kalbarri.

We’d really like to thank these individuals for enbracing the spirit of “giving back” and also like to that the companies that have given us a helping hand along the way:

Climbing Anchors Australia , Mainpeak, Ferno,Hilti, Mountain Designs, The Hangout, The Rockface,Urban Ascent and especially those individuals that have made some really crucial monetary donations.

Those of you that have been involved so far would know all to well how much blood, sweat and power bars goes into the replacement of old bolts.

The reality is heavy packs, tricky ropework, much energy expelled, plenty of blood and skin loss, noise, dust, messy toxic glue, roaming reptiles, sharp edges, swinging heavy objects, trashed personal equipment, no FA glory and a long sore walk out. But the most important part being the new friendships, big smiles, tall stories and a whole lot of rewarding shenanigans:).

That said, rebolting routes costs money and absolutely thrashes your gear. I personally have spent at least $2000 and that doesn’t take into account my time (which i donate for FREE). My own personal climbing equipment is starting to get really trashed and will probably need to be replace in the not to distant future. My point is that there are people out there willing to donate all this and expecting nothing but warm fuzzies in return, yet alot of people can’t manage to drop $5-$10 in a donation tin(1 bolt cost around $6-7,).

At present the re-bolting kitty is bare and we are really keen to get some work done up in the Kalbarri Gorges. Please, we need your support to keep the work happening. If your not sure where or how to donate, then drop us a line. If you already have then please, encourage others to support this worthy initiative.

Hope to see you out on the rock soon…

    Peace

Although not a SCWA person, I have rebolted a number of routes around Perth using my own drill, drill bits, glue and bolts, as well as climbing gear. I too can attest that it is a difficult and expensive undertaking.

Each bolt installed costs me about …

    bolt – $3 to $5

    glue – $2 to $3

wear on drill bit – $1 to $2

    wear on rope etc ….???

    plus my time…

So folks, if you want safer climbing and better routes, how about supporting SCWA!!!!

There are donation tins at some of the gyms and shops. Otherwise you can make a donation to CAWA who will then pass on the money to SCWA.

Note however, that CAWA DOES NOT DO BOLTING itself. Also all bolting must be according to the CAWA guidelines – and that’s actually written into the CALM regulations.
