As I mentioned in a post a few of weeks ago, the Perth Hills National Park Centre (PHNPC) is in the process of scaling back its public information role.  The visitor centre at the PHNPC will now only open to support their community education programs through Eco Education and Nearer to Nature.

Therefore, as of Wednesday 1st August, 2012, DEC’s Perth Hills District office, which is located across the road from the Perth Hills National Park Centre, at 275 Allen Road, Mundaring, will take over the quarry bookings.  Bookings can be made 7 days a week during normal business hours 8:00am to 4:00pm by telephoning 9290 6100.   At this time of the year the weekend enquiries will be diverted to a rostered officer, who will have access to the booking records.

Later in the year (September/October) the DEC office will be open on weekends throughout the summer to accommodate their bushfire commitments.  Therefore I would ask all climbers to, whenever possible, make bookings Monday to Friday during summer.

DEC are also going to trial bookings via an email address Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm.  The email system is for climbers who wish to make bookings in advance, as the response will not be immediate, and is only available Monday to Friday.  The email address is:

    MundaringLocalAdministrators@dec.wa.gov.au

Please note that groups not climbing or abseiling are required to complete a non-commercial recreation event application or film permit prior to making a booking.  This includes geological studies, weddings, concerts, educational activities, filming etc.

CAWA asks that you please be patient during the transition as district staff become familiar with the process and the booking system.  Please also pass this information along to anyone that you may know that maybe impacted by the changes.

    Thanks for your patients!

Just a reminder that the phone number to book to climb at Mountain and Stathams Quarries in the CAWA Perth Climbing Guidebook has changed as of the 1st August 2012.

The new number is 9290 6100, which is the DEC’s Perth Hills District office.

Bookings can be made 7 days a week during normal business hours 8:00am to 4:00pm.

If you have any enquiries, please contact CAWA via email: cawa@climberswa.asn.au

This reminder comes about as the Perth Hills Discovery Centre is still receiving calls for climbers wanting to book to climb at the quarries, up to 10-15 people a day leading up to a weekend.

This is likely a result of othe old contact details being published in the 2010 climbing guidebook.  As such it will likely continue to occur for national and international visitors to the area who are not aware of the changes via this website.  The Perth Hills Discovery Centre is aware of this, so this is a friendly reminder to try to capture those people.  I have requested that the PHDC continue to redirect these people and they have replied that “climbers are always such a happy bunch so no problems with redirecting (them)”.
