ThomasGuest
I am making a trip to Perth from late December to January from Colorado and looking to do some sport climbing. I climb with the grades out here up to a 5.10c lead (which I believe corresponds to 19-21 Australian rating). What are some good single pitch spots around Perth? What are some recommended guide books you guys use?
TonyMemberHave a look for the guide books here https://www.climberswa.asn.au/climb/guidebooks/. And look at the online guides for Western Australia here https://www.climberswa.asn.au/climb/online-guide/.
Best spots for climbing in Perth are Stathams Quarry and Mountain Quarry, Churchmans Brook, Wungong Valley, Darlington Boulders and Avon Valley. Further afield down south is Willyabrup off Margaret River and then there is the West Cape Howe, Albany and Porongurup’s region. Up north is Kalbarri.
CAWA runs a number of events and you can see what’s on on this website, how you can join up with other climbers etc.
Western Australian sport routes use bolt plates in many cases along with ring bolts, so you may need to invest in +/- 8 bolt plates in addition to your own gear. Summer here from December onwards is hot and outdoor climbing is usually best in the early morning or somewehere in the shade late afternoon.

ThomasGuestTony,
Thanks for the info. I will absolutely look into those events and get in touch once I get down there.
Cheers,
ThomasRossGuestFor pure “sports climbing” I would recommend Kalbarri (500km north of Perth), Bob’s Hollow and Willyabrup (250km south of Perth), Mountain Quarry and Stathams Quarry (20km east of Perth). All are covered in “West Australian Rock”, available locally, eg at Rockface climbing gym, but descriptions for the last two are out of date. For those and anything within 100km of Perth get the “Perth Rock Climbing Guide”, 2nd ed.). Miniguides for bouldering are on this site. Enjoy!
ThomasGuestThanks for the info guys. I’m planning on picking up some bolt plates here as they might be cheaper (although non typical). What are standard sizes they use out there?
Cheers,
