well some of you might think its self opinionated self centered wank talk but theres nothing on here like this of yet so i thought id get the ball rolling..

i dont exactly know yet why i climb i think if i tryed to give a reason id contradict myself at some other time so therefore i concentrate on comining up with multiple reasons because personally i dont like answers but more questions to reason with.therefore i think i climb for a moment of clarity or isolation which then gets contradicted by my enjoyment of being in the presence of others who climb and starting fights and giving shit to my belayer(all in good fun). climbing however makes me more aware of myself but its through being a practicing artist that has made me analyse and find the links between my actions- climbing being the most prominant, making me relise that i love the total distancing that it gives me from the constrains of society, the feeling of being only surrounded by those who are also indulgent in the same thing you are and know one else, the feeling of just being out in the environment the list goes on. just as art made me realise why i climb climbing has made me aware of why i practice art. whether its leading top roping bouldering etc im in my own little world where not much else matters.i could blabble on but i wont i just wanted to start and share something, as a petty injury has been the thanks of a boring 2 weeks of no climbing.anyway ill stop dribbling now…

For me it’s self-expression and rehabilitation.

A few of you would already know I’ve got a disease, leaky gut syndrome (intestinal permeability), which severely limits what I can do in the world. Yet when I was 17, I found that climbing was something that my body could actually do and handle, and quite well (in comparson to my mates anyway).

In a previous state of depression, climbing becomes directly symbolic of the struggles of life with a disability and then conquering them.

If you’ve ever climbed with me, you’ll know I’m obsessed with grades, and you may wonder why. Most people like to climb for freedom, nature, thrill whatever, for me, the difficulty level is symbolic of goals being reached and broken.

You’ll find that I’m not particularly interested in on-sights too, I like red-pointing something beyond my reach that takes dozens of times of throwing yourself back at the route until you complete it, and the psychological effect that comes when you surpass a previosuly ‘impossible’ level does great things to your self esteem, confidence and belief in your own abilities.

Anyone who’s been to this forum knows that I post like mad and am obsessed with even the smallest of boulders, yet you get immunity from being made fun of, after all, who’s gonna make fun of a disabled kid? 😉

Seriously though, if there’s anyone else out there like me, or you have a friend that hasn’t tried climbing yet and faces similar challenges, introduce them to climbing, it did wonders for me! 🙂
