G’day all I am looking for some advise on what is the best tent to buy and also a sleeping bag for western australian conditions…..

The tent will be obviously for myself, however I would like to get one for my wife and son Dylan also so what is the best 3 person tent that is light and easyly carried in my new macpac Cascade.

The sleeping bags, well Dylan has one and just need an idea on what to get for myself and wife.

thanks guys. and also add any other tips you can think of.

You have to be more specific in order to gain some valuable feedback.

        How light?

        HOw much $$?

        What size PAck you have??

Furthermore, WA conditions are medeteranian which is great and we tend to think we are spared from the bitter cold of winter. But there are many places in WA that certain sleeping bags will not do. You wont freeze, but i bet the family will be requesting they go home the next morning!!!

But if you have loads of $$ and dont mind splashing it about a bit, then go with a MACPAC or BD tent- size is up to you. Maybe it be a good idea to get a one person Bivvy for your son, and a two person tent for you and yor wife. I am sure you son would appreciate and love his own little space. Also he can carry it as they dotn weigh much. He can also grow into it and he’d be set for the outdoors for many years to come.

As for sleepng bags, again MACPAC are quality but there are also others eg MONT. Get something rated at least to 0 degrees if not lower. Sure they’ll be hot in summer but they’ll be good in winter. I’ve used down sleeping bags on many occasion in WA so consider down over synthetics. But the local store guys usualy have a wealth of info on sleepig bags etc.

In conclusion, you need to figure out your specifics.

then seek some more help via this place or the shops.

make sure you get sleeping bags that zip together.. mummy stlye bags arent that suitable for WA i suspect unles you can get them with a full length zip so they can be opened out on warm nights

silk liners are a really good investment, keep your bag clean, add some warmth and are good when you dont need all the heat of a bigger bag

its hard to find a light, packable three person tent… ive had macpac olympus, hemisphere and minarets which are fine for two adults but a struggle for three even if one was dylan

olympus are heavy and over engineered for WA , minaret are lighter but less roomy, hemisphere are tpo big to carry far… one advantage of macpac over BD maybe ease of service if you have a problem.

what about a super roomy tent fly, groundsheets and mosie nets? works pretty good, is cheap and versatile

          good luck mate

Definitely got some left and right sleeping bags so you can join them up like.

thanks elliott, I didn’t think to ask if they had left hand or right hand sleeping bags……. Does it matter with tents mate ? I have a right handed hammer to knock the tent pegs in

Um Shane, there are actually left and right sleeping bags that can be zipped together to form a larger bag for spending “quality” time in. Wild and Outdoor magazines have good gear reviews for the sort of stuff you are chasing as do a few online sites. In the end though it will be what is within your budget that you feel comfortable with.

                    Cheers

Yeah, nothing like having one giant big shag bag when camping with the missus.
