    Chris.

I’m a newby looking for some advise on how to start climbing in areas surrounding Bunbury. I live about 30 minutes South of Bunbury. I’ve read about the Rec centre being open Thursday nights, but my wife works then–so I’m at home feeding, watering, and bedding our kids.

Aside from the Rec centre, or just going to Welly dam and standing there with a fist full of rope until someone shows up who looks like they know what they’re doing & asking them; I’ve not found any real information on what steps to take to actually climb.. Strangely, I have been slowing buying gear–even without participating in the sport. So I’ve got my own shoes, harness, ATC, etc.

I had thought about taking a weekend away to Margs, and going on a rock climbing tour with Margaret River Climbing Co.. Maybe the TR course(2 days), but the TR course is pretty expensive if both my Wife & I participate.

So, back to the purpose of the post; Does anyone know of somewhere other than the Rec centre to start some learning around Bunbury, or could recommend that the Margs Climbing Co. TR course is worth the hefty lump of cash?

      Cheers,

      Chris.

Hey mate, Mick is the man and his course is bomber, well worth the coin. There are heaps of climbers down here and a lot who dont have (temporary!) medial epicondylitis and get out every weekend. If your on facebook check out Margaret River Climbing Buddies and the very friendly Rob C will get you motivated and no doubt help you out..

Thanks Kym. I might have conjure up a plan to ditch the wife, save a bunch on teaching her how to climb when she isn’t interested. ‘Honey, let’s go for a romantic weekend to Margs. You can go to the chocolate factory… For two days.. by yourself… Ok, seeya, bye.’  ha.

Hey there. Was wondering if you had any luck with climbing. Myself has taken a fancy in the sport and wondering where to begin. Since I am from bunbury myself

                  Hey Reece,

The advice I got was to go to the Rec centre, Thursday night. From memory,  it was $20 to join and $8 each time you attend. Make some new, patient friends from there who’ll show you the go.

Unfortunately,  between work and home life I’ve not made it to the Rec centre yet. I have snagged a trip to Rockface in Northbridge, that was cool. I’m still keen to get into the Rec centre, and meet some people from there. If you want to try it out with another newbie, give me a call 0409 047 267. Might make me find a spare couple of hours.

                  Cheers.

Hi guys, head to the PCYC in bunbury (near the entrance to the REC center) on thursday night, 7 till 9. It’s either $20 or $25 to join and then $8 per night you climb. Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the correction Ryan, PCYC. I would have ended up in the pool. ha.

I just checked the PCYC site, $30 annual + $8 per visit.

I’ve been thinking today, busy isn’t going away. So I might as well get into it. I’ll make a go of attending tomorrow night’s session.

                      Cheers,

                      Chris.

                      Chris.

Just thought I’d give this thread a bit of a summary, for anyone who stumbles upon it & is still wondering.

                        • You don’t need to pay membership on your first visit, so it’s only $8 to try.
                        • You can borrow a harness from the PCYC.
                        • You can climb in  your own sneakers.
                        • If you come alone, you will still get a go (though bribing a friend may work too)

There’s a friendly crowd that shows up, with a spread of ages and skill. It’s good fun, and I would encourage others thinking about it to just give it a go, it is only $8. From my experience so far, climbers don’t bite. You’ll just have fun.
