    I’m keen to hear from anyone who climbs and is a Christian. We’d have a lot in common, and I’ve got a few ideas. I’m inspired by, for example, Solid Rock and similar websites you can click to from there (www.srcfc.org) and Christian Surfers (www.christiansurfers.org.au). Email me on:

    I stand corrected. (On polished slabs faith works as well as anything else, or as badly:)

    Slabs lead to fear, fear leads to hate, hate leads to the dark side.

    Nice one Yoda!

    I’ve been known to mention The holy one’s name fairly frequently whilst climbing. Apart from that and my old climbing shoes, that’s about as holy as I get.

    Cheers

    I guess the good point made above is that you slab climbers already have the main pre-requisite, see below:

    “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:1,6)

    This is best contemplated on “Speeding Chickens” at Mt Cuthbert.

    And by the way, you carry the church in your heart, no need for fancy buildings, OK?

    Also “thou shall not drill wherever there are trad gear placements”. That’s why I made them, silly.

    Good to see some fun comments on this! Thanks to “God” (hmmm!) – I had even thought of posting the same verse and, amazingly, the same example climb to illustrate faith. Looks like climbers have a good appreciation of what it is already!

    There’s a couple of serious questions in there, I think. Would I climb with a non-Christian? God forbid! In fact I think the answer’s yes most of the time. Hence the original post, to see if there’s any similar animals to me out there. Church in your heart…, no fancy buildings or traditions required, but being part of the church (people) is good. Christians aren’t that effective in isolation – God deliberately doesn’t work that way, he made us social creatures, who depend on each other.

    Any more Christian climbers – please do contact me on email as per start of this thread. That’s enough from me, off to the gym…

    In Memoriam:
    Two climbers – Jason Wells and Tim Klein – die in fall from El Capitan, June 2, 2018

    “And yet there is One who holds this falling“
    – In Memoriam –

    Maker of the mountains and sculptor of the rock,
    Our grief is deep, but our gratitude is deeper still:
    for the privilege to touch the living rock
    during the few summers of our lives;
    for the opportunity to climb
    and to grow beyond ourselves;
    and for friendships, planted on hard granite,
    which remain forever green.

    God of grace and gravity,
    We are reminded again, painfully,
    that in a broken world
    handholds sometimes break,
    feet slip,
    ropes snap.
    Reassure us that there is One who finally holds all our falling.1
    Help us to trust that Love is stronger than death.2
    And should mountains move or we fall beyond the reach of friends,
    let us fall into the hands which have held us from the beginning –
    the hands which will set our feet at last upon mountains
    that will not turn to dust3
    beneath a sun which will not set.

    Spirit of the Living God,
    whisper hope to those whose hearts have been broken by stone and loss;
    make new our lives,
    the Changer and the Changed.
    Let all who walk through the valley of the shadow of death
    rise up on the wings of promise:
    For you will go out in joy and be led forth in peace,
    the mountains and hills will burst into song before you.4
    And the song shall never end.
    1 „We’re all falling…
    And yet there is One who holds this falling
    Endlessly gently in his hands.“
    “Autumn“, Rainer Maria Rilke

    2 Song of Solomon 8:6

    3 Isaiah 54:10

    4 Isaiah 55:12
