I am trying to find out if there have been previous ascents of Chatham island’s big East face – if so, any details? I’m planning to go climb it anyway, but any info would be great, Thanks, Domhnall

Yes – A group of climbers involved with Australian Geographic went there several years ago, did a number of climbs.

A photo of a climber on the large east face featured in a Simon Carter climbing calender (about 1997 or 98 I think)

A feature article also appeared in Aust. Geographic.

Please be aware that Chatham Is. is a Class A reserve and permission is required from CALM to land there – also there is 1 landing site only.

You may want to contact Pete Nidd about it.
