      Hi all,

Just been hooked by the climbing bug! Would still be at a beginner level so i am wondering if it is better to learn how to climb, i.e. a course, or just to teach yourself through practice? I have 2 mates who i climb with, however their work schedules are all over the place I will probably need to seek a buddy to make it more regular!

Also, I am potentially moving up north (Karratha) at the end of the year…is there anything in the way of climbing up there?

      Cheers,

      Andrew

        Hi Andreew,

As to your second question, there is rock up here. After two years of no replies at all, i’ve had 2 in the last week – email me at hates_ at hotmail dot com if you head up here.

I’ve always thought rock climbing courses were a massive waste of cash and should only be considered if you cannot hook with anyone who’s already experienced.

Just try and hook up with some dudes and learn the ropes (excuse the pun) for free. Just offer to buy a beer when ever the chance pops up 😉

I just finished a course last weekend with Adventure Out and found it great. You get more comprehensive teaching with someone you are paying than with someone who would prefer to be climbing rather than sitting at the base of the crag all weekend talking.

I have also learnt a lot from other people I have climbed with over the years, however there were reasons for needing to pay for this course.

The most important thing I think, regardless of who you learn from, is never take one person’s word for anything (including mine). Do whatever you can to understand what you need to know (knots, anchor selection etc), ask many people and make your own, informed, descisions.

              Hi

As a climber who has started going regularily in the last 4 months I would definately say plenty of practise. When you feel good at something move onto something harder. Boulder and try different size and shape holds. Ask lots of questions, I’ve never met a climber who wasn’t keen to give me advice. When I’m stuck on a climb I watch someone who can do it and then as for advice on the part I can’t do.
