Even the CAWA president hasn’t got the gate codes. CALM are being a bit precious about things. You don’t have to book to go climbing yet, though they have discussed it nor do you need accreditation. We have been desperately trying to talk them out of it. For what it’s worth there was a fire at Mountain Quarry a year or so ago. If the gate had been locked, (it inadvertently wasn’t), four of us would have had our cars burned out. A few weeks ago, Statham’s wasn’t locked. This meant the abseiler who fell could be carted out by ambulance rather than carried to the road. Common sense may prevail one day but you will die if you hold your breath. Having said all that we have to walk to every other crag.
