As with last year few years, this year’s CAWA New Year trip will be a general Albany trip rather than just a West Cape Howe Trip. The CAWA camp starts Thursday evening, 27th December, at the Upper Kalgan and finishes … when everyone goes away – maybe the 1st or 2nd.
We will be camping at an old farm and it’s a bit rough but quite convenient to Albany and environs. There is a few sheds on the property, one of which has a bit of a kitchen with a sink, fridge and gas stove. The other sheds are filled with tractors, dead computers, strange metal farming implements, bush rats, possums etc. There is a toilet and shower, both with good views of the Kalgan River. You’ll need to bring camping gear – tent, sleeping bag, mattress, basic cooking gear.
Peak Head is 30 minutes drive plus walk, Porongorups are 25 minutes, West Cape Howe is 40 minutes plus Toc-mobile or hike, the Amphitheatre is 25 minutes drive, etc etc. If the weather is crap, there is also a climbing wall at the Albany Rec Centre, as well as vineyards, the Kalgan River, and plenty of hiking.
Climbing will be organised down there, although I suggest maybe Gibraltar Rock or Castle Rock at the Porongorups on the 28th so that people driving down on the 28th can met those already down there and get some climbing in on that day.
