Heya, I just moved to Cranbrook and am keen on tackling a few crags thru the stirlings… Yeah the possibilities are endless i know! I’m aware there was a guide published in 1972, is there anything available a bit more up to date? Or will it be sufficient. If so where do i find it? Thankya

Yo Yo, at any good climb/outdoors shop. Or the guide (cawa) you will find them and more

the guide for mt trio sport climbing is online on this website (see mini guides)

the old cawa guide is the only other guide that I know of (besides WA rock, which is generally good, but lousy for the stirlings), and that is quite limited for the stirlings

there has been talk of a new guide for bluff knoll but if it happens it won’t be for a while

I have heard a few times that there is no guide and the only way to get decent info is to talk to someone who knows the area, etc…

Any chance one of you guys who has climbed down there a fair bit could maybe create a topo by photoshopping routes up a photo of the Bluff and adding a simple legend to it? ie such and such route, good gear placements 16. I mean it is the biggest cliff around here and a likely draw card for anyone wanting to do multipitch and almost non existent beta except for the odd story of when someone has actually been there to climb.

the old spiral bound CAWA guide has sufficient information. if you can’t find the climb from this you probably should stay at churchmans a bit longer.

a photo topo isn’t going to work as the face is too big and it would be useless at any position outside the car park.

ross seems to be flaunting a trip to the stirlings over anzac day long weekend. tag along and see what you can learn…..

Some of the old descriptions are ok once you’re on the routes (like hell fire gully and coercion), some not so good… but most descriptions are very confusing for finding where the route starts. Even after i’d done my time at churchies, i didn’t get any assistance from “start on broken rock near bushy crack in front of tree”.

Doing a trip with people who have been there would be ideal, if not try to talk to someone. email me or rob wall if you like:

what sort of hexes should i buy owen ?

maybe more of the routes should have bolts that way you can tell if you are on the right route. Much better to start at the large P-bolt than at the small shrub next to the broken corner….

No hexes, Neil – just an abseil rope and crowbar and I doubt you’d ever leave

Buy ALL the hexes. Three or four of each. While you’re at it, lots of cams and nuts too. You just never know what you’ll need.

And the “old” spiral bound cawa guide book is to be found where? If it so good but out of print, how about someone scanning it and putting it among the miniguides section on this website?

Thank Owen, have contemplated heading down every so often but due to lack of local knowledge I have never done it. Will get in touch with ross re anzac day, though was heading to margs. Cheers all

Not really Perth at the moment, working away in the Pilbara. Lot’s of rock, I just can’t get to it.

CAWA has quite a few of the old guides left and we give them away free to members.

Catch me when I’m back in Perth, or talk to Phil, we’ll organise it.

                              Cheers,
