      Hey there,

Went for a bit of an explore on Sunday and bumped into the ranger. After explaining that we were checking out some climbing areas he mentioned some interesting things.

      1) Climbing is not allowed

      2) The existing climbing areas were not put in with permission from CALM.

      3) He is aware of the CAWA Perth guide and he reckons that CALM have contacted CAWA to have the Avon areas removed.

I notice in the guide nook that a lot of routes were done in 98. This ranger said he started in the park in 99. So is it a case of different ranger, different attitude? Of CALM not being able to find a record of prior approval?

Personally this will not stop me climbing here but I just thought everyone would like to know.

      Cheers,

      Danny

Don’t know anything about it. There was an area, CALM asked climbers to leave alone, as people were using it for meditation, but it certainly wasn’t the whole park. I’m also pretty sure Ross spoke to CALM when he was putting routes up out there and there were no problems then. We’ll check it out and let everyone know the outcome.

Just a note. As a service to all of us, if anyone has an uncontrolable urge to speak to CALM they could refrain from waving the guide book in their face. We don’t really need too many unnecessary arguments.

The entire access situation is exactly as described in the Perth Guidebook. I visited the climbing areas with the ranger before the crags were developed and before a single bolt was sunk. I showed the ranger what a bolt looks like and how we propose to use it. This was an official CAWA-CALM meeting, pre-approved by the CAWA Committee and minuted. I forget his name but yes, this was the ranger before the current one whom I have never met. The ranger was agreeable to climbing. The CAWA Access Officer should have all of the correspondence and agreements on file (large paper box with dividers?). The only area in Avon that I did not discuss with the ranger was Quarry Creek because I did not know about it at the time. The guys who developed that place did that off their own bat and as far as I know without asking anyone. However the Quarry Creek crag is so hidden away from any tourist trails and so insignificantly small that I could not fathom any grounds for climbing not being allowed. The only place where the old ranger requested we do not climb was around Emu Falls which is a tourist lookout. But now I’m just repeating what the guidebook says. However if there were any developments in the last few years then I would not know.

Anyone reading this please note access is a very sensitive issue, different approaches are best suitable for different areas, and CAWA should always be involved for advice. This is because it is not CAWA’s mandate to hinder people, but it is CAWA’s mandate to promote climbing.

            I hope this helps.
