We’re heading over from Sydney to WA in a week and needed some helpful advice…

Can anyone advise what size gear is most commonly used at West Cape Howe?

Does anyone have up to date info for Kalbarri? Directions & how long the walk in is?

      Thanks!

WCH is a chancey thing this time of the year. 80m high cliffs, you know the weather’s bad if the spray blows over the top . Gear – natural, nothing incredibly small or huge. Depends on the route. Other climbing areas near Albany are well worth a look. Peak Head in particular. or stop in at Mt Frankland for amazing bolted (sort-of) slab climbing.

kalbarri, go to the tourist parking at the Z-Bend on the Murchison River gorge. Walk down the track and head downstream. A relatively short walk, read the guidebook. Be careful of soft rock. Very small nuts do not hold.

West cape need a decent size trad rack, plus plenty of runners

some smallish cams are useful and you’ll use med cams a lot a couple of big pieces hexs or cams canbe helpful especially rigging rap anchors

a spare rope for an abseil line is v handy if you can take one

as is a few m of slings or static for setting anchors around the top of the cliff you will find good anchors but they can be spread out

prussicks and a helmet are a good idea

          have a great time
