Hey
Lead comp/ top rope comp is on the 2nd of september.
Be there no excuses, whines, ‘Im not good enoughs’
The more the merrier and the more likely stuff can be organised in the future.
Tell people to come and watch as well, it should be an awsome day.
See you there
Hi Tony,
Yes there is a comp on at the Rockface on the 2 September. There will be categories for open lead and top rope as well as masters lead and junior top rope. We will have lots of giveaways that everyone can win, not only the category winners.
The details and entry form will be online soon, or you can enter on the day but you will need to be early to register!
Hope to see you there!
Hope to see you there
I’d love to come along and set up a few video cameras to get some of the action.
Come on everyone, enter the comp and let’s make it fun and a success. Especially old farts like me, let’s have a few of us battling it out and showing up the young ‘ns on the way! Idea: if there’s not too many entries in the masters, I suggest to lower the masters age to Jon Gregg’s + 1.
The comp is ~3 weeks away, and no one knows about it…
when is the comp details going to be put on the site ?? and the forms
Speaking to Gerrard at the Rockface yesterday, he would love more posters to put all over the place, for example on the lead walls etc. Then people will know it’s happening! Assume same for other gyms.
Any word on how the comp will be organised? Two years ago the girls and guys were on the same lead routes which made it fun for oh, a whopping TWO girls (Jing and Kate!).
I know it takes a massive effort to organise these comps, usually in someone’s spare time (i.e. volunteering; big thanks to everyone who does so) – but I don’t want to pay $30 for 1/2 a climb!
The competition entry form can now be found in the news, on the front page.

How will the competition work? Is it who climbs the highest grade? Who climbs it faster? Who has the best technique or just who can complete the climb?
Does anyone out there know what type of rules and waht type of routes and how the judging is done for the under 14 top rope comp ???? Just wanted to know what to expect so I can get my son trained up. Don’t know if it is a speed test or just a test of how someone climbs ?
thanks
shane
Hi Shane,
Under 14s, 16s open top rope.
3 attempts at each of 4 climbs in a three hour period. The climbs have a range of grades. Best performance wins. One success on the highest grade climb beats any number of successes on the lower grades. This is the qualifying round. Qualifiers go into a final where they onsite a climb they haven’t previously attempted. They are in isolation while other climbers attempt the route. Best result wins, places determined by second and third best results. Final is sudden death. A fall, rest on the rope or use of a offroute hold is the end of the attempt and the last onroute hold reached is the result on the climb. It’s a bucket of fun.
Cheers,
Toc.
Thanks Toc, I will get him trained up and ready. How did you go on thw eek-end, did you get a climb in ? I spent the day at Mountain Quarry left in the dark.
Righto, so where do I get a form to sign up?
Hey Elliot
Read five posts above……the answer you will find
The planned format has been released, and is available via the news tab on the front page.
“Read five posts above……the answer you will find”
Yeah I had misread the thread, I thought they said that the form was on the front page of the Rockface site, no the CAWA one.
Hence I was confuzzled.
No mention (I think) in the rules etc. of a masters section – is it happening? Shane said a while back that it should be, and that it should be possible to start it at midday or so. I hope so, as I can’t be there before approx 12.00. And of course, there won’t be many of us old farts, so hopefully the arvo is ok.
Another thing, is it cheaper if I sign up before the day?
There is a Master’s section planned, starting at 12:30. However the registration is at 8:30 – 9:30. I will be at Rockface tonight, (Tuesday) after 8 and will have some registration forms and will make sure there are some left there as well. Also at UA Friday for the Rhino night. There is no penalty for registering on the day, or you can read that as there is no discount for registering early.
WHAT WE DO NEED.
Belayers and judges for the top rope and lead. There are 4 sets of belayers and judges needed for the top rope, plus spares, and 2 at a time belayers needed for the lead. One of the pluses with having separate categories is competitors from one category can belay those from another.
If you have time, pleeeeease volunteer. It’s more fun than you might think and you get a very different view of the action.
There is an art to belaying a lead comp. Ideally the competitor should be able to forget about you, ie the rope is never so tight they can feel you, but at the same time never so loose they feel nervous.
CAWA is putting on the competition for the climbing community and really needs community support to make it work both as entrants and as helpers, so if you’ve got time on Sunday to do more than just compete, put up your hand. See Shane, Michael or me. Having said that just compete if that’s how your life and the day runs. Believe me I have been to plenty of comps where I just rocked up and climbed.
See you all there,
Toc.
