G’day there, Fairly new to climbing and was wondering what equipment(besides 60m rope, shoes, harness) I will need for top roping here in Perth or down south and also for lead climbing in perth or down south.

If someone would be so kind in suggesting what I should have so at least when I go out there I have all the gear.

      Many thanks…..

A Gri Gri(although not required) I find is a great device for top roping.

However using it to belay a lead climb will require a bit of practice.

With setting up a top rope, the equipment required all depends on the climb.

I would highly recommend going out with someone who has knowledge in doing this.

            Shane,

Do the rounds, ask LOTS of questions and decide for yourself. Mainpeak, Paddy’s, MD’s all have specialist climbers happy to help. Each store will tell you their gear is the best but gear is a personal thing. As long as it is rated and certified buy what YOU like and feel comfy with.

Wild Country, BlackDiamond, HB, Petzl etc etc are all bloody good brands with great reputations. Its a Ford V Holden thing….all do the same thing its just personal preference.

dude, if you just want someone to tell you what to buy:

              For starters:

*single rack black diamond C4 camalots from .5-3.5

*a few smaller cams (BD c3s or aliens)

*rack of dmm wallnuts (doubles of each if youre super keen)

              *rack of 12-15 sport draws

              *3-5 extendo sling draws

*if youre doing lots of toproping, a 10m length of static rope or webbing.

              done

….and dont let anyone convince you Wild Country friends are good. they have a very limited range and tend to get stuck.

If anyone disagrees with this its only because they bought them while they were solid-stem friends and still own them. oh and theyre probably 40 years old and reckon churchmans is a “great crag”

and those chain link cams – fuggedit

A starter pack for perth is:

1 Rack of Wires sizes 1-10. Possible double up on the 8 9 and 10.

4 friends #0.5 – #1 (x2) – #2 Black diamond or HB it does not make much difference

10 quick draws (For both toproping / and sport / trad leading. Buy good ones, the webbing may wear but the binners will last you a while if you look after them…

                  6 bolt plates

                  4 screw gates

15m of 8mm static line for the setting up of belays / top ropes. Its called a cordellete.

                  2x 0.5m slings

                  2x 1m slings

Thats it. As you build up on it just increase the amount of gear you need for the climbs you are climbing…

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, exactly what I needed. I have already started my collection and have the following gear.

1 Flyer II 10.2 mm beal rope

                      1 Rope bag

                      1 petzl harness

                      1 pair sportiva ‘Mythos’ shoes

                      1 set Wild Country nuts 1 – 10

                      1 Black diamond ATC-XP

                      1 Oxygen biner

                      1 Black diamond Wire Beaner

1 Nut Tool with Cord Attached already for sling

                      2 Black Diamond dynotron/livewire quick draws 11mm

                      2 DMM Revolver biners

                      6 Kong screw gate biners

                      1 Petzl ‘Ecrin Roc’ Helmet

Will get some cams but what confuses me is Big Country made the first cams and now everyone copies them but someone in the post mentioned not to buy Firends because they get stuck and have a limited range ? any ideas.

thanks again for all the input

nope shane, WILD COUNTRY (not BIG COUNTRY) made the first cams, called ‘friends’. a cam like BD camalot is not a copy as it has a double-axle design that is responsible for it’s increased range. Just take the tip man – BD

Everyone forgot to mention other things you’ll need if you climb around Perth:

                            Machete for the bush bash approach hike;

X-ray vision goggles to help you find the carrot bolts disguised against grey granite; and

Large scary dog to leave at the car in order to dissuade local thieves.

But on a serious note- this is a sport where you can get killed if you screw up- so I repeat the previous poster who suggested that you ask lots of questions and go out climbing with different people before you head out by yourself.

Adventure Out runs a good course that covers the basics of gear usage. That way you can try different types of nuts/cams etc. and figure out what you like best before investing.

                            Stay safe out there . . . .

Maybe Wild Country get stuck when you use them. User error I suspect!

I like Holden, must mean you are a ford man!

                                  A Real Trad Man

I think Churchies is a great crag and anyone who pays out on Perths first and most pioneered crag is up themselves and is a ground fall waiting to happen.

When did climbing become “if you climb there you’re not cool” ??? Here I was thinking climbing was just plain cool, period. Grade 5, grade 25, ice, mountain, aid, sport, trad, bouldering – who gives a toss? Stop being a tool and just get out there and climb!

                                    2 cents

mate, go to a shop and look at and play with the different sorts of cams and find what you like but even better climb with a few people and try out different types of gear. Any post you read on here will have a personal bias and it may not suit you.

                                            Hi Shane,

I’m planning on going out to a crag Saturday afternoon, probably not Churchman’s as I expect it will be weeping water. I’ll have someone with me who will also be top roping, and I have a comprehensive and eclectic rack, just in case you want to have a look at some of the possibilities. What ever you start off with will be expanded.

By the way a full set of cams is a lot as well as a lot off money. Having said that my rack of cams, (13 in all) is not enough and will be added to, but not from one single manufacturer, nor do they all get carried at once. My first rack was mixed and numbered 7 cams, with 14 wires and 4 hexes, (I can hear the hissing now), but I had a lot of fun and a few falls. Still do. Enjoy. Climbing is a big world with lots of different ways of enjoying it. You’ll work it out.

                                            Cheers,

                                            Toc. 0438 915 902

Churchmans rocks man. Gp there find anything under 15 and go clean up what the REAL TRAD MEN leave behind because they are going out there to CLIMB…….

Anyways means you can a rack real fast and cheap with a variation of cams and wire just to solve the indecicive issues….

                                                Happy hunting.

THANKSfor all the info everyone, I have a better understanding now of what is required in perth and south west.

I am getting next week 1 complete set of Black Diamond C4 Cams. this will be together with the already phurchased Wild Country complete set of nuts. I think I will get another complete set of nuts. I already have heaps of different sized slings, tape, and cord. I will be getting the following week 20 Petzl Spirits Quick draws 17mm and a couple of weeks late a complete set of Black Diamond cs Camelots.

This should keep me busy for awhile and I might later complement a few extras cams from Wild Country to add to the setmand a few hexs.

Watchout Margaret River at Xmas time. 🙂
