Hey just wondering how many climbers where in the fremantle area
all the gyms seem to be at least half hour away
wondering if there would be enough people to start a fremantle climbing co-op/club
if not it would still be good to know the other climbers around freo so we could get together for climbs and share in transport costs for going to climbing gyms/climbing trips
Hey Dude,
Im 10 min away from freo. If you’re keen for a climb send me an email [email protected]
Cheers,
Nat
Freo climbing gym – Blackwall Reach.
Actually, I have thought about a climbing gym in the Freo area before and I’ve wondered if Notre Dame or Murdoch Uni would be interested. Maybe CAWA could contact these unis and see if they are interested in some sort of arrangement?
I think Notre Dame would be interested as they have an outdoor education degree pathway and all their students are required to get their nolrs as part of their units so a training area for them would be completely justified…… (might lead to more of them passing their course too XD )
Anyone had any luck on this topic ?
I know a few schools in the area that have climbing walls but unfortunatly due to insurance issues they no longer get any use :'(
Hey yeah, im another SOTR climber,
maybe someone interested in starting a Freo gym could look into some of the tall old warehouses around the traps, would be great to get a 15-20m high indoor gym going!
Hi guys!
how are the plans for a climbing gym in freo? is there anyone? may be we can share transports costs for some climbing!
Hi guys,
I am in applecross (near freo) and I’d be keen to climb SOTR.
Daves idea about CAWA enquiring about the school walls sounds like a good idea. Does anyone know if there would be any way to get around the risk/insurance/health and safety issues that the schools would face if they let a group use their wall?

Matt

Enquiring with schools about using their climbing walls is a good idea in theory, but will most likely never happen due to current workplace health and safety standards and liability etc… to do this you will need staff monitoring all climbers who hold a suitable qualification who would then have a duty of care for everyone climbing on that wall. This is a risk that schools will not want to take… whats in it for them?? Yes schools do have walls for climbing which are used by students who are under the direct supervision of trained instructors with the appropriate client to guide ratios. These instructors will want to be paid and will not do it for free which will most likely be the biggest problem. Also there are very few lead climbing instructors in Western Australia so again this will be an issue. My advice would be if you are still very keen to climb ‘Indoors’ at a local wall go and get a climbing qualification and talk with the school outdoor education teacher and you may be able to work something out but nothing guaranteed.
Agreed Freo climbing gym = Blackwall reach
Plus it makes your hands a lot tougher!
I live in Freo and boulder on the many natural and man-made ‘crags’ around Freo and southern suburbs. Check out areas around the Round House… there are solid sections amongst the crumbly parts. The man-made wall between the Round House and the train line on the bike path offers good crimpy-slab bouldering, and at high grades too!. The man-made wall at the end of the staircase near to Bathers Beach is good and fairly solid, I have now broken most of the loose bits off anyway. There is a limestone wall on Ellen Street which has some solid sections and a bit further north on East Street is more bouldering options but the traffic here puts me off.
Just out of Freo, try bouldering at Cottesloe Wall below the rugby club, it is good for foot work but the best bouldering other than Blackwall Reach is the mini crag in Peppermint Grove.
Note 1: Cottesloe Wall and Peppermint Grove, have signs from the council saying ‘no climbing’ but I have never had anyone say anything, I think people are more fascinated than anything else; I climb on them regularly.
Note 2: I was climbing on the man-made wall near the Round House near the train line (as mentioned above) and five Police Officers walking there local beat stopped to talk to me. They said I was not doing anything illegal and left me to continue climbing.
Hope this helps. Rob K
