Hey everyone. Me and a bunch of friends are planning a weekend trip up to kalbarri to do some climbing (the gorge). But we don’t do trad climbing and I’ve been hearing that the bolted routes tend to be difficult (23-29). The best in our group is probably at about level 21 indoors(lead), maybe a bit better.

Is it still worth us taking the trip, or are all the bolted routes really too hard? We’ve got a guidebook but it’s not always clear which routes are trad and which are bolted, and the trad routes tend to be a lot easier apparently.

      Thanks for your help.

Grades are a touch on the soft side. Generally drop 1 grades from that listed in the guides. That said the majority of the climbing is in the 22-28 range and it is steep.

It is an amazing place and you will have a great time but would recommend at least having someone in the group that can top out so that you can get your draws back or set up a top rope. You can not rap into the majority of the routes.

its a long drive to climb the handful of bolted routes that are at your grades, having said that its a fantastic spot, great bouldering and exploring to be had, just scrambling through the gorge is a great time

you’ll need a fair bit of experience in selecting natural/trad anchors, rapping, changeovers etc. to get much top roping done as access to the tops of routes can be problematic (if you dont climb them)

Many of the routes at moderate grades use a mix of trad and bolts
