I was hoping I could find out some more info on climbing in this area. I will be over from the UK and fancy knocking out a few routes but am unsure what sort of rack I will need, the most suitable crag etc. I climb at UK grade severe, which I believe converts to 10-12 in the Australian grading sysytem. I was thinking about Churchmans Brook and Willyabrup?

      Cheers,

      Lee

Both CB and W have excellent low grade climbs. Gear is natural of all sizes, with some bolts. Australian bolts require boltplates avaiable at climbing shops. $5 each.

In the south-west there is quite a bit of climbing. Near Perth is Churchman’s Brook, a natural cliff; Statham’s, Boya and Mountain Quarries; and Mt Cuthbert and Wungong, both granite slabs. These are all 15 – 30 metres or so, with grades of 10 – 30. There are also quite a few shorter crags/boulders. Further south (250 – 300 km from Perth) is Willyabrup, Bob’s Hollow, Wallcliffe. Near Albany there is everything from 1 m boulders to 300 m overhanging cliffs.

Have a look at the photos….

Natural cliffs are usually trad with some bolts. Quarries are usually bolted, but there are numerous exceptions. For trad, cams and nuts. For bolted routes, as someone mentioned, you need ‘bolt plates’ which will freak you out, although ringbolts and fixed hangers are to be found here and there.

          A 60 m rope is best, but a 50 will usually do.

          Have fun!
