Does any one know of a company that offers travel insurance that includes mountaineering (medical and evacuation)? I know of a company in the UK, for UK residents, called Snowcard, which is recommended by the BMC, but I don’t know of an Australian equivalent.

Try the New Zealand Alpine Club. I have looked for Mountaineering insurance in Australia without luck. The details of the policy that they offer can be found at: http://www.alpineclub.org.nz/default.aspx?p=23

You will need to become a member before taking out a policy.

Thanks Rob, but I see that the NZ Alpine Club say they “provide travel insurance to members resident in New Zealand and traveling overseas. We are also able to cover Australian members travelling to New Zealand only”.

I have subsequently found on other sites (chockstone) that the Austrian Alpine Club (UK) http://www.aacuk.org.uk/?navid=97 appears to offer insurance to members, and not require the members (from what I read) to be UK residents.

I used travelsafe for our 2001 cho oyu expedition to tibet – we had a major claim which was never resolved but at least we got a permit.

Try Covermore, or Banks and Cooper in Vic Park. B & C are brokers who *may* be able to ofer cover depending upon where you are going. They cover me in NZ from time to time.

unfortunately, covermore doesnt cover mountaineering. i’m a travel agent and even i have trouble finding cover for my clients on this sort of stuff…

try NIBA. they are the national insurance brokers association. it’s where i divert my clients to.

I used IHI when i was climbing in the Alps. Its a denmark based travel insurance. Covers climbing up to somewhere over 6000m. Will fund the rescue but not the search. includes medical.

get in touch with the Austrian Alpine club. They could help you financially.

try to engage in a spiritual connection with the mountain for some real life insurance.

                    enjoy.

Insure4Less will cover anything up to 6500m for about an additional 33% Worked out as about $800 for me for the basic plan plus Alpine climbing cover for 12 months.

I’m an avid canyoner and mountaineer, as well as a self-employed financial planner. I’ve recently found an Australian life insurance policy that will cover up to $500k death or total and permanent disability (TPD) without exclusions or restrictions.
