Heya,
I was just wondering, as I’m gonna be up there at Xmas, is there anywhere ‘reasonably’ close to Kalgoorlie to do some climbing? No, Peak Charles is not reasonably close in my book.
Thanx muchly
kevin Bloody WilsonMemberThere are some awesome, diagonal dykes [not THAT sort :)], running up the side of the Super Pit.
TocMemberThere’s a horrible, grotty, chossy, loose stacked quarry somewhere between Kalgoorlie and Kambalda I’ve been to. We belayed off a Landcruiser. There was a thirty ton boulder at the arboretum, (amazing what a mining company with great big trucks will do for their geoligists), and there are several granite domes much smaller than Peak Charles but somewhat closer, (~80km not 300). One of them just missed out on being a nuclear waste dump, but it’s name escapes me. Other than the rock in the arboretum nothing real close, unless you can get into the Super Pit, (unlikely).
kevin Bloody WilsonMemberThere’s some fantastic cracks in Hay Street,Kalgoorlie … or so I’m told
BenMemberUmm, that boulder in the Arboretum, are we allowed to climb on that? And how high is it?
Thanx
TocMemberAs I understood at the time it was put there for climbers, however that is 10 years ago, the arbouretum may not even be there now. If still available, it’s about 2 1/2 metres tall. It was fun, but hardly serious fun. There are some granite domes around within 100kms, you’ll need a good map and/or some serious local knowledge. Cave Hill is good and has climbs on it, Burra Rock is worth the drive just for to look see and might be interesting. All bush tracks.
Cheers,
Toc.
