It seems that there may have been some more movement on the Skywalker Wall at Mountain Quarry, this time in the vicinity of Power Play. I have yet to confirm this personally but thought it wouldn’t hurt to remind everyone about the instability of this area.

The instability of the Skywalker wall is not news but newcomers to climbing or to Perth may be unaware of the history.

Please see here for more info:

Ten years ago stabilisation of this wall was carried out as the result of a geotech survey. CAWA and CALM (as they were known then) liased closely about this work.

A further survey was conducted a few years ago and the results were not available until after my previous term on the committee ended in early 2011. I have heard nothing since then and will need to follow up to see what the conclusions of that survey were. I will post a news item once I have more info.

In the meantime I can only reiterate what I’ve said before in the post referred to above: take personal responsibility for your own safety. Signs and a fence were erected a long time ago. Climbers still use the area in spite of some large blocks falling off over the last couple of years. You are using this area entirely at your own risk.

I was on Powerplay about a month ago and noticed a large block inside the laybacking crack was loose. I suspect the entire face has shifted and as a result this block is now loose. It doesn’t look as though it will fall out, but the fact that that face may have shifted again was enough for me to decide to never climb Powerplay, or any of the routes to the left of it, again.

Climb at your own risk guys!
