Shh! We were having fun when UA was only getting a couple of people each night. Now it’s crowded!
As for what it’s like … shiny! Nice new holds, nicely textured walls and fresh gear (duh).
The climbs are fun, and a good range (heaps in the 16-22ish area, and at least one great lead dyno). The crowd’s great, being mostly climbers (no parties full of pizza-eating kids greasing up the holds!), and there’s a fair bit of leading. The gym’s been well-designed, and has curved edges and a couple of realistic cracks and holes, rather than the screwed-together bits of plywood the other gyms are constructed out of. IMHO, this makes for nice climbing, and is much more aesthetically pleasing. The staff aren’t terribly experienced climbers, but are doing a great job of running the gym, very friendly and attentive, and open to suggestions (they were very quick to get clocks and fans when asked for them, although they may have been planning on getting those anyway).
Watch out for the combination of gri-gris, new ropes, and normal (non-slow-go) pulleys — you need a good touch to lower topropers smoothly. I’m just waiting for the first few times inexperienced belayers drop their climbers from the top of a wall at full speed. The texture is great, but it eats shoes (and ankles, knees, and anything else you put in contact with the wall).
All in all, it’s a great gym. A much better experience than the other gyms in Perth.
