      Hi,

I’m 13 years old and I want to get into climbing. Are there any courses I can do to learn technique and saftey and stuff? Are there many climbers my age? And how old do you have to be to join CAWA?

      Thanks

        Hi Caitlin.

The hangout does a course for rock climbing technique. its already started though you may still be able to join in.

Often the best climbers are the younger ones so theres definately nothing stopping you.

        hope its helped you

What suburb do you live in (careful what you say though, don’t give personal info away on the net)? If you’ve got time to save a few dollars here and there, the best thing you can do is by a pair of climbing shoes, and the best time is when they’re on sale! 😉

I like to do plenty of bouldering, which is a dignifying way of saying I have no money and find a release in a sport that requires next to no money at all but is still rather difficult!

If you’re anything like me, you’ll go wild for any bit of granite that comes your way, keep an eye out when you’re out with trips on parents for any boulder sets, I’ve dozens of bouldersof which I had no idea existed a year ago and I spent a lot of wasted time, lots of bush walking and heritage trails! Plenty of boulders there!

As someone who only started out about 2 years ago, don’t worry about people who try to tell you what real climbing is and isn’t, all the best climbers in the world practised on things like brick walls, side of houses, plublic walls, all sorts of places like that. You can have plenty of fun climbing if you can think outside the square.

          Have fun! 🙂

            Hi Caitlin,

I’m the CAWA secretary and can answer some questions.

You can join CAWA as a Youth Member.

This will cost you $35.00 a year or $18.00 for the rest of this year,(up until the end of June.(Present membership fees), or your whole family can join as a family, for $50.00/year or $27/half year.

For this you get the CAWA magazine, 4 times a year, Gym entry discounts, (check with the gyms to see which nights), 10% discount on gear you buy from most of the outdoor shops, (ask at the shop), emails from CAWA telling you what’s going on, where and when, including gym crash pizza nights. Trips away from time to time, depending who can organise them. Here you have a problem because we would need your parents to sign a disclaimer, and also at least one of them to come with you at least until you turn 16. Your parents will have to read and sign a disclaimer for you to join, (when you turn 18, you sign it for yourself) Same goes for crag crashes, (that’s local crags). We have social nights usually at Rosie O’Grady’s Northbridge, so again you need your parents. The next one is this Tuesday and two people will be showing slides of a mountaineering course they just did in New Zealand. There’s usually CAWA members climbing at Rockface gym on a Thursday evening if you and your parents want to to talk to someone. There are bouldering competitions in the gyms and a climbing competition as well.

Jon Knight is right. Bouldering is great fun, and a good way to learn technique and it doesn’t cost much. It’s a good idea to have a friend to spot you. And yes you can find buildings, trees and walls etc and sometimes people don’t like you doing it and sometimes they don’t mind.

You can still get hurt bouldering, so take it easy and that’s why a spotter is a good idea.

Adventure Out also run climbing courses, for outdoors climbing for when you are ready.

            Hope that helps a bit,

            Cheers.

            Toc Foale,

            CAWA secretary.

John is also right, be careful about giving too much information about yourself on the net.

              Hi

I am also 13 and I love climbing

I haven’t done any courses or anything but I just go to indoor gyms and have a go. I find it really fun. I am also going in the bouldering competition this weekend- at rockface gym. My little sister is having a go too.
