    oh yeah….

if anyone wants to host it (.pdf), let me know. CAWA has lost its website so miniguide updates are not happening e.g Porongurups, Pipeline Boulders, Wombat Rocks….. etc etc.

We’ll have a new webmaster soon and if you send me the guide (maritza_ilich@yahoo.com.au), I will ask our retiring webmaster, Chris Dorrian, to put in on the web.

I understand he will upload items once a week.

    Cheers

    Maritza,

I think there is a backlog of these things that need posting. Several people sent in material for posting somee time ago and it was not done (apologies if this is incorrect). If you ask for these people to re-submit or search through the messages you will see who they are.

Neil’s mini-guide is now up on the CAWA website. (Some of Matt Rosser’s guides have also been posted).

Hi Neil – The Porongorups were always my favourite place to climb in WA.

I’d like to keep up to date on the new routes there – even if I never get to climb there again.

Pass it on that if anyone wants to put a few life saving bolts on my climbs on Gibralter Rock I have no objections.

Hi Neil, awesome guide, i used it at Castle Rock a few months ago. My wife and I would love to climb ‘sucked in ben’ during the school holidays (week of 9 October). Do you have any other info on this route other than what it says in the guide? Specifically, how many bolt hangers will i need? How much trad gear if any? If we return by abseil, how bad is the friction (in terms of pulling the rope(s) through)? Do you know of anyone who’s done this climb recently and would you have their email addresses?

    Thanks Stephan

Do you still have copies of the Porongurups climbing guide available. If so I would appreciate a copy.

Ventured to Porongurups a couple of weeks ago. Any updates on current access routes etc to gibraltar rock especially as it seems to be a highly abrasive bush-bash at the moment.

Would like to make a return trip as the crag looks amazing from the road 🙂

There was a fire there a few years ago.

The regrowth has been thick and a new climbers trail has not been marked. There are bits and pieces of the old one still there if you are lucky enough to find them. Follow the directions in the guide and head left from the fire road through the bush. The red tags are long gone….

There have been some new routes done since the update. keep your eyes out !

Hi guys. Been reading this post and just thought i would put something out there. I am by no way an expert and have had no formal training but i have a strong handle on web design and community based sites. I have always wanted to make an online guide for climbing in WA if it had backing by the CAWA community. I could certainly make a website with the skills i have that would allow CAWA committee to moderate the site but allow anyone to register and upload photos, beta, new routes, comments …. you get the idea. Just putting it out there. I wont put my time into it unless i think everyone will benefit from the site.

Let me know what you think =)

P.S I am in no way an experienced climber, relatively new to the sport actually but I have caught the bug and keen to meet climbers and gain some more experience. Thanks again

Hi web guy, CAWA have already started making progress on exactly this. Please contact us at cawa@climberswa.asn.au if you are interested in helping out.

Gib rock is one of these places where investing in a GPS is a good idea, so is using Google Earth to stake out a few way points before setting off from the northern approach track. Entering the scrub too early is a really really bad idea!!

By the way the Garmin eTrex works under trees, it also works under my tiled roof in fact. Other uses I have put it to lately: (1) making sure I don’t drive past the the Mt Frankland turnoff late at night (2) finding Eagle Tor (3) seeing how accurate my car speedo is! $100 well spent…..

We had much entertainment bush bashing to the base of Gibraltar a few weeks back, after finding that we couldn’t get to Castle Rock as they were working on the walkways. It was something of a slog, to put it mildly.
