There’s always a good group at Rockface (after 6pm), generally just bouldering- and since the boulder comp was on Sunday all the problems are still up so it’s a great time to come and play.

          Hi Wal,

The first time I ever saw rockclimbing was on Mount Barren (I used to live in Ravensthorpe). I just watched at the time, although it definitely inspired me to start. It was a while ago, so I don’t remember exactly where the guys toproped from, but I remember that they abseiled down and climbed back up. Looked like heaps of fun!

Try along the coast below East MT. Barren near Hopetoun also Edwards Point further along the coast. Although its not the greatest ,there have been a few lines put up in the area.

                  Gday Wal,

I live in Hopey and have been looking around the place for a few climbs. the summit of East Mt Barren is a few possibilities. I haven’t had a look at the sea cliffs yet but there is plenty of potential if the rock is OK.

Drop me a line [email protected] if you want a climb sometime, I get most weekends off.

In reply to Neil. Regarding Cape Vancouver. We have had a good look and there have been 10 or 12 lines put up in the early nineties. Access is a problem as it is a nature reserve. If you want any details contact me at [email protected] also if the guys from Ravy need any directions for Hopetoun ,ditto. I don’t suppose you have any photos of Cape Vancouver taken from the sea? It would be good to do a topo. Jim

As far as I know, none of the climbers that I know who have been to Cape Vancouver have been able to get photos from the sea.

However, I do have a near complete set of photos west to east (left to right) for along the cliff, taken from about as far back as I could safely get on the bottom terrace on a relatively calm day.

Please email me at [email protected]

if you would like me to scan them, so that you can do a topo (inclusion in Western Climber)?

Hi, I worked in the Hopetoun, Ravi area for many many year and explored anywhere there was a rock. I did find some very good site and self belayed many. The quartz can be a little slippy at times and along the sea cliffs the lay is at time in the wrong direction.
