I had a look at this microquarry years ago and could see nothing there over 6m high or worth “developing”.
Two stars would mean that this is one of the best climbs in Perth…. really ??
Not my fault you wear glasses and cant pick a good line.
That why we are privileged to have sharp-nosed new route experts like you to set us straight….
Folks, rush out to Sharp Rock this weekend and take note. THAT’S what a truly great climb looks like. (And if you cannot see the greatness then go get glasses like me).
Ross: I have over the years had the privilege of repeating a number of your climbs around Perth. I have to admit that some of them did not look that inspiring from the ground up how ever it was often the case that my initial impressions were proved wrong and they turned out to be most enjoyable. I always reserved judgement untill I had at least attempted the line. It there fore suprises me that you feel the need to pass comment on other peoples efforts without even having attempted them yourself. If you really feel the need to comment on someone elses line it might be an idea to atleast attempt it first. This would at the very least give your comments a bit of credibility and hopefully allow you to be constructive in your criticism. I think you will agree that vetting new routes from the comfort of your armchair is rather pointless.
I’m going to have to agree with Bjorn on this one, although you should have left out that glasses comment. 😉 Climbing is far too undeveloped in WA to have pointless bickering, like I’m always saying, bouldering is still considered mucking around here, where as in the Eastern States, people are very interested in cranking a V4, etc….
I think ALL climbs should be climbed before being judged, that’s for sure, I have my own little parts of the world that probably I’m the only person that’s touched them. Looking at some routes might not inspire much confidence, but there’s something to be said about the sheer adrenaline of standing on a 3mm imperfection on a seemingly blank face and making over the crux.
I’m sure Bjorn has plenty of cool little niche climbs that suit plenty of people and will be considered absoultely classic by some, so lads, please don’t compare sizes…..
Bjorn, you are right and I’m sorry.
My apologies, I must have got off on the wrong side of the bed or something…..
Finally hauled my fat carcass out there and had a go. Gotta eat my words on the quality, it is a nice climb with two well placed bolts. I would say 7m long, grade 21 and one star. Somewhat reminiscent of Sonic Hedgehog at Piesse Wall, complete with the mantle.
Good luck with the climb to the left of it, I didn’t have a hope in hell, nor did Danilo (although he at least got off the ground !).
Glad you enjoyed it and I agree with your comments. The well placed bolts were courtesy of Mr Rosser so I cant take all the credit. I think the L arete is way beyond my noodle arms which is a pity because it will be a good line when it goes. I am sure that there are several youngsters in Perth who would be more than capable of putting it together if they can drag themselves out of the gym for 1/2 a day or so. Must be getting old, happy cragging.
Bjorn,
Maybe if you went down to a gym with the ‘gym junkies’ you might be able to send it yourself.
Hi All,
Where is Shark Rock Quarry located? I’ve done a bit of stalking online and I know it’s in a guide book… but a little help would be massively appreciated 🙂
Hi Ning
You need to park at the dead end of Jellicoe Rd in Glen Forrest then backtrack to the driveway as stated in the guidebook. You start on the driveway but will see a lower parallel firebreak track – use that one. Continue as per the guidebook. You turn right from the main track on to the downhill track mentioned (another firebreak) then left on to a much smaller trail through the bushes. This one is harder to spot. The ‘quarry’ is a smallish pit on the way through to the group of boulders collectively called Shark Rock. Depending on where you turn off from the downhill track you will either walk over the top of it, so it will be to your right, or below it so it’s on your left. Basically, you hit the quarry before you get to Shark Rock itself (a large split boulder with a sharp righthand arete).
