    Disgruntled indoors climber

Urban Ascent the newest and cleanest of the 3 main gyms desperately needs some new climbs put up and by that I mean not just 1 a fortnight, its definitely losing customers due to a lack of fresh climbs.

All offers to route set have been turned down due to a lack of clean holds ready to be put up??

The Hangout could do with turning the main lights back on so you don’t need a head torch to lead the 2 year old roof climbs.

      I can’t comment on Rockface as I haven’t climbed/bouldered there in years!

Anyways I’m hoping this is a thread people can add their gripes about the gyms to in a vain hope the proprietors read up and take note.

Thankfully, the situation is improving at Rockface. Last night I was impressed to find some new ropes, new lead climbs and the new bouldering wall almost finished. All welcome changes after several years of stagnating.

I bumped into Gareth Wall yesterday, he’s back in perth & working at the rockface after many years away. Perhaps he’s brought some much needed enthusiasm back to RF.

The Hangout have their light low for “atmosphere” apparently. I’ve whinged several times about the cave-like conditions (even wrote a letter one night! Don’t know if it went past the young guy at the counter.) with no luck. Methinks it’s a cost-cutting measure. The temptation to climb with my headtorch is too much ;>

So glad some one has brought the subject up. What about the state of the couches at the Hangout. Bit of an eye sore. Just not quite sure what could possibly crawl out from them!!!

              The evaluation

                1. Urban Ascent – Is new clean a nice location to climb. It does have a limitations in the height and for lead climbing and it also needs to change and add new climbs more often.

                2. The Hangout – Is great for strengh training and has a great boldering cave, but please get rid of the old couches and all of the old matresses that are used to land on. They are old, dirty and a health hazard. Also how about turning the lights on so people don’t have to climb with their head torches.

                3. Rock Face – needs a facelift, get rid of the old ropes, clean the toilets and make the place respectable. Clean the holds.

Overall the 3 gyms offer everyone something different. But they all need to get their act togehter because if someone decided to build a new gym and they did do it correctly then the others would soon be out of business.

Perth needs a larger climber gym that has higher climbs more challenging to us better climbers. possibly someone needs to look at the fantastic climbing gyms in the states and build a new gym modeled to those. Whats better 3 gyms that scrape to make the grade or 1 gym that caters to all needs and makes everyone happy.

Oh for the tossers that like to drill and make their own holds in the quarries maybe they can have a natural rock wall and they can come along and drill holds make their own climbs.

think the small wall in Byford rec centre takes the cake…. in the several years the wall has been in existance i dont think they have changed or put up any new climbs!!

The new bouldering wall at Rockface is FANTASTIC. Someone put a lot of effort and thinking into it, well done.

Rockface – I’ve taken a school group there and the guy was more interested in showing off to a girl than their safety.

Urban Ascent – not been there but keen

Rockface – My favourite friendly staff, friendly climbers and they are making a real effort to do the place up. New bouldering wall, new ropes and now redoing the toilets. Seems to get more popular every week.

I wish I had the capital to start a gym. I came from the states working at my Uni’s climbing gym, which admitadly was fairly new and pretty decent, plus it had the support of very large group of student climbers. But holds were changed daily as well as new routes being set with existing holds and everything was stripped off of the walls each year, cleaned and reset as we ran an annual boulder comp and set 50 odd problems for it on the cleared walls, new routes and holds were then bolted up over the course of the year until bam back down again.

Check my new topic as far as an idea I have to generate something like this.

I’ve returned to RockFace after a while and am impressed. They’ve fixed up the bathrooms and seem to be cleaning them more regularly- because they were disgusting last year.

There are new routes going up (and the holds are pretty clean) in a range of levels to cater for just about all climbers.

                            Well done guys!
