      Hi,

I’m in Exmouth for the week and after checking out Yardie creek along the touristy walking trail today, it looked like a prime spot with ~40m decent looking sheer orange walls and water below.

Does anyone have experience climbing in the area? Are any routes documented?
Does anyone know if the local authorities/rangers tolerate climber?

We climbed a few routes in the nearby Pilgonamen gorge which was really nice, but some old bolts are coming off the rock. The newer overhanging sports route are very neat.

Yardie Creek is a very beautiful place. I’ve accessed the cliffs in the past by kayak and soloed small sections of the rock over the deeper water but never taken any gear there. I’ve no idea if anyone has documented routes there. My first guess is that rangers would not be too keen on us climbing there. I definitely wouldn’t use chalk if i climbed there so as not to spoil the aesthetics of the place – there’s a tourist boat which cruises up the river to look at the cliffs. And there’s quite a few tourists who walk the track at the top so be aware they might knock or throw the odd rock off the edge.
        Pilgonamen gorge is great !!
I’ve had a look up in Shothole canyon but everywhere i tried had really flakey rock and i couldn’t even get off the ground without flakes breaking off under hand or foot. Anyone had better luck up there?
I also had a look in ‘Learmonth Crag’ behind the airport, which was kind of interesting for a play but pretty short and not the best for gear – i just used a toprope.

          Hi JC,

No climbing is allowed at Yardi Creek Gorge due to a small localised population of endangered black footed Wallaby and a large number of nesting birds. I’d suggest you contact the ranger at the CALM office in Exmouth before you do more climbing in the Cape Range National Park, as they will direct you to any other places you can’t climb if there are any. There are quite a few routes that have been established at Pilgonamen Gorge, but to date only the boulders at Shot Hole Canyon have been top roped or bouldered. The routes are published in the Northern Rock guide by Shane Richardson, and were accurate and allowed at the time of publication in 1996.

Please send an update from the Exmouth Ranger with any updates on the climbing areas to [email protected] as we’d like to keep updated with any additional information they have, and any other areas s/he’s seen that look good for climbing!

on a related note, if you’re in the area it might be worth checking out the Fig Tree Cave. I haven’t been myself but apparently it opens up into a 10m cathedral. No gear needed, just a scramble and ladder.
