Rock climber plunges 150m to her death
A teenager fell 150 metres to her death in Queensland’s Glass House Mountains when part of the cliff she was climbing gave way, police say.
The 18-year-old woman from the south-west Brisbane suburb of Calamvale, was climbing with a group of eight people on the eastern face of Mount Tibrogargan, a popular climbing spot, when the accident happened about 1.30pm (AEST) on Sunday.
“It appears she was negotiating a cliff when the piece of the rock wall she had her hand on gave way and she fell backwards,” a Queensland Police spokeswoman said.
It’s understood the woman, who has not been named, had been rock climbing for about a year, the spokeswoman said.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.”
ElliotMemberUhm…was she not roped up?
DiMemberFrom another news story:
The 18-year-old, who was a member of the QUT Cliffhangers Rock Climbing Club, was reportedly changing her safety clips when the handhold gave way.
!!!!!
Does anyone else know more (accurate!) details? Although it does sound as if she wasn’t roped up at the time . . . .
ElliotMemberChanging her safety clips?
Sounds to me like she didn’t know what she was doing.
Then again, I wasn’t there.
ed nepiaMemberbe real careful assuming anything regarding the real cause of a climbing accident based on media reports..
especially because any negative assumptions can be very hurtful to family and friends, i’ve seen this stuff happen before and often the media get it wrong , folks make assumptions and the whole grieving process can get even worse then it already is
eh..
shane shawMemberfor a detailed report and route description go tho this forum topic and read all. I have a link to the best news article thus far and also a link to the site that has a topo of the Glass House Mountains
