Maybe so. But if N’s Mum is right then they’re lose enough to be rotated with a nut tool.

It was bolts like those that contributed to Nick Kaz’s death last year in the Blue mountains. If something like that happens, there won’t be much left when the legal rottweilers are done. Still , we shouldn’t be wimps. Losing your house can be nothing compared to a bad ground fall.

I have been back to the quarry today to do some remedial works and met a more experienced bolter, who provided me with quite a bit of constructive advice.

The P bolt that sticks out is fine according to the numbers. However since it is not sitting correctly I am in the process of removing it. We tried to remove it today but it is proving difficult to remove even with the aid of a crowbar! It’s still there and will be removed on Saturday, hopefully…

I have removed the all the loose rocks, including the block with the bolt in, from the climb to the right of ‘Aerobic with Alan’. I plan to install a replacement this weekend if all goes well.

Was the bolt on Red Back chopped or did it fail when someone was testing thing, I would like to know either way from whoever knows, please let me know by whatever means you feel appropriate. If it was a failure, do people want it replaced?

The apparent problem/lose bolts have been removed, but only with effort. Replacing these bolts forms part of my to do list this weekend.

I hope to set some new routes on Saturday if you want to come and help; one to the right of Aerobics with Alan; one to the right of Black Slab and a final route to the left of Red Back. If you want any routes doing bring some 12mm diameter drill bits.

I will be using Hilti Hit Re-500 for the replacement anchor resin.

Just wondering who the “the numbers” are who thinks it is good practice to have the eye on a p-bolt sitting well out from wall (15mm for example).

the only reason i can see that anybody wouldnt recess a bolt, would be through complete laziness. It is pretty easy to just drill a straight hole and glue up to the ring(as has been done in this case). But to recess requires more work and experience to fashion a decent notch. With the aim being to eliminate any possibility of movement, seal and cover the weld-especially in a coastal environment and to minimise the visual nature of the bolt.

I dont really care to trade hot air on the structural differences of both methods, as it has all been sprayed before.

we are talking best practice and the concept of taking a little pride in your work.

Good on you Ash for getting out there and contributing to WA climbing. Just dont be afraid to ask for a bit of guidance.

hammond:I am really curious as to how you propose i should add a bit of imagination into my REBOLTING!!. As there is so much room for creativity when you are replacing bolts that someone else has placed. Or are you refering to the type of bolt?.

    Hi Ashley,

I will be back in Perth as of Monday so am more than happy to spare a few hours if anyone would like a run through recessing P bolts.

    Richard,

The drill I had on loan has broken down and it may be terminal. Phil is going to have a look as he has a workshop to tinker in.

If we can barrow your drill would you be interested in doing something next weekend, this weekend is no good as we have a surprise visit from a friend this weekend and the weather was not looking to good?
