My partner and I will soon be heading to WA to climb for a month or so (see ‘coming to a crag near you’) and we were wondering what is the most common sized pro for places like Kalbarri and Margaret River??
We currently have friends and nuts in various sizes but will we need larger cams (size 4 and above) or large hexes (looking at purchasing a set of wild country rockcentrics)
We would appreciate any local knowledge you have to offer here.
cheers,
Nina-Jay & Carwyn
RossMemberHi – No large cams required for Kalbarri and Margaret River. The only place for these is the South Coast (Albany area) really. There is the odd wide crack elsewhere but few. Sizes of cams should be from mid-size Alien to about No.2 Camalot (or 2.5). Nuts of mid-sizes. Kalbarri is mostly sport climbing anyway. Hexes can be placed but you don’t need them. If you don’t have them then invest in 90 degree PFH bolt plates, the other types may not fit on some of the carrots. I hope this helps.
NJMemberThanks a lot! I actually thought that Kalbarri was mainly trad so it’s great to hear that it’s bolted.
I might stick with current gear and see what I’ll need for the rest of Australia,
thanks again, you’ve been very helpful
