Hi all, This is my first post and I’m very Gumby to Rock Climbing so mind my posts…
I just wanted to let people know if they didn’t already that Coral bay (1300 or so klicks north of Perth) has some amazing bouldering spots.
I just came home from a weeks holiday, fishing, snorkelling and some days it was very unsightly weather for ocean activities so I discovered that at the point of the main Bay (to the south) there is quite a few good bouldering spots.
I saw tape on the rocks so I am guessing someone knows about it, I don’t know what grades are or how they work but it ranged from what seemed like impossible to some very easy bouldering.
There was a chimney-like split between two faces, which I shimmied up and climbed, and a stout red rock wall with many jug holds and 4 finger pockets. At the highest point I took a fall of 3 metres into about a foot and a half of ocean and soft sand (at high tide) which broke my fall amazingly.
I spent every day finding new routes and testing my strengths. For a small town that is mainly focussed on Ocean based activities it was a warm relief, and cooling off was very easy too.
I found some more treacherous spots where I climbed without pro gear (silly I know) a couple of cliffs to the south and enjoyed a sunset with a gigantic lizard soaking up the last of the suns rays.
I have some nice photos, just let me know if you want to see them and I can post them somewhere!
Blue Skies,
Rosco
SethMemberYeah i was at coral bay a couple of months back, great steep limestone boulder crag on the beach! Shame I didn’t take my shoes…
RoscoMemberAhhh so that’s what it was, I wasn’t sure what kind of rock it was…
I had some very odd climbing shoes with me, They’re called Vibram Five Fingers. They’re shoes with toe pockets, pretty good for bouldering cause you can grip your toes around the rock.
RobinMemberSteep limestone bouldering! My favourite!
I’m definitely keen to see the photos…
RoscoMemberUmmm sure. Just check out my Coral Bay album on facebook. My profile is public- Rosco Farrell. Coral Bay is my most recent album. I’ll add some more shots of the wall. ^_^
sethMemberHello folks,
Given the scant replies to this thread I’m not real hopeful BUT… does anyone out there have any info on the bouldering at coral bay?
The boulder crag looks pretty sweet and from what I can find several people have previously been there and bouldered as far back at least as 2003/2004.
If anyone has info to share it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
seth
RoscoMemberSorry bout delayed reply dude… got so much stuff going on, caving, Free diving, paragliding, hiking etc I get caught up in the motion…
Email was sent to you regarding this spot.
Enjoy!
sethMemberThanks Rosco.
Keen to know if anyone has taken time to record any of what they have done previously in the years gone by?
Given the out of the way nature of the location I’d assume most of what has been done there has been pretty impromptu rather than destination climbing. Yet if anyone has recorded any of the boulders/routes they have done it would be good to know?
cheers,
seth
GMemberHey,
I’d like to see the photos of the bouldering spots for sure in Coral Reef!
