howdy just got back from a trip down to wellington dam quarry, just wanted to alert all, that looking at the quarry wall, the top left top rope anchor station has 2 petzl long lifes that are loose by around 1cm, there is still a big 50kn petzl which looks bomber. the rest of the bolts seemed ok, i didnt check any of the lead bolts or achors.
Mmmm…not surprising, a few years ago a DEC contractor screwed toprope anchors the same way. I could not believe it when I turned up and saw these ringbolts with test tags attached to them and could spin the bolt with my bare hands!! Maybe this was the same guy. There is a couple of well documented ways to screw up a gluing job and both involve not mixing the two parts of the epoxy glue together properly.
As they say….only your mother can be trusted….
Last year at Arapiles I was talking to a mate who told me about screwing up a glue job once. From what he said you could spin the bolt the next day and when he saw this went about removing it and fixing the glue job. Took 2 people with a 6′ breaker bar to remove the dodgy bolt, so yeah it doesn’t surprise me that there could be some dud bolts out there with test tags on them.
Just reinforces the adage: even if it looks bomber, back it up.
These had test tags hanging off them, which i hadnt seen before so perhaps the same mob, also the petzl long lifes are not glue ins
they are an expansion style, tried to attach image wont allow me, ive only just gotten into climbing less than 8 months ago, and didnt have the tools or experience to make any changes i just thought i would report it for those to be aware,
someone has spent alot of money on all the petzl hardware down there thats for sure.
