Quick question. Was recently climbing in Gracetown crag (pity about the knob jockey that angle grinded some holds into the rock…..you dickhead!)when a couple of supposed locals watched us climb for a while. They then demanded we stop using the sight as it is apparently an aboriginal “artifact” significant sight. according to them all the lower off anchors at the top were put in illegally without CALM permission and that climbing is banned at the sight.

Is this true????? Because the two of us had a nice little disagreement at the time and I now want to know if a made a good old goose of myself.

I believe that some if not most of the anchors at the top were put in by CALM. These would be recognisable by attached metal id tags. Myself and some other CAWAs spent a week end a few years ago with the local Calm ranger trying to repair the vandalism to the cliff. CAWA had notified CALM of the angle grinder damage and they were sympathetic. However the vandals returned and removed all the filler we’d put in. They also put in a lot of very intrusive P bolts. Which I think have since been removed, but which probably inspired Calm’s little warning sign at the base. I don’t believe CALM ever minded us climbing there. Though it might be asking too much to expect explicit permission and the legal entanglement that goes with that.

Cheers richard. P bolts were still there mid march-april! All anchors had tags as you describe so i assume my little stoush was with a peanut that just didn’t have anything better to do but start an arguement. Mate i love the outdoors
