Hi! I’m in Brisbane but will be spending a couple of weeks in Coral Bay with a friend in late December/early January. I think I’ve unearthed every WA climbing site known to man just about, looking for info on Kalbarri and Exmouth. I lead maybe 18 or 19 on a good day, provided the protection is good and am wondering if I will find much within my abilities at either of these two spots. From what I’ve read, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot at Exmouth and Kalbarri sounds either loose or too hard! I’d probably give my (non-climbing) friend the shits majorly if I headed off climbing while I’m meant to be visiting her, but it would be worth it if it’s good. Can anyone give me some first hand info on whether or not it’s worth my while getting there?

    Cheers!

I reckon it’ll be entirely too hot for those areas in January, us Perth-based climbers head up in June/July when it’s cooled down considerably.

Anyone been to Kalbarri in January?

    Hi Diane,

I have no idea how hot it’s going to be I think. I’m sitting here at the moment with a fleecy vest on. In December! Cushy Queensland 🙂

    You’re right, we’re gonna fry!

Ok, next question… what about deep water soloing in WA?

Reagarding Kalbarri,Most of The climbs are graded 20 or over with not alot of top roping. Soloing In WA is Limited without having a splat factor. There Is some river cliffs at Blackwall reach(near Fremantle). To compensate there r though some interesting boulder problems out towards Armadale and Darlington

    Hi,

I spent 6 months in WA about 12 months ago and managed to get up to Coral Bay and Exmouth over the Xmas break lat year. It was extremely hot. Coral Bay had some awesome bouldering problems onto nice sand about 50 metres from the water. It was really cool, and had been climbed recently by others who had left their chalk prints everywhere. GO to the main beach where they run the kayaking tours and most other activities and jst walk around the point heading south. It’s dead easy to find and only about 100-150 metres from where you can park your car.

    Merry Xmas.

    Dan.

    DAN, you are THE MAN!!

You have totally made my day! I had pretty much resigned myself to a non-climbing holiday and here you tell me I can find some bouldering practically in my friend’s front yard -AWESOME! Thanks heaps. Merry Christmas to you too.

    Cheers,

    Laurie
