Arapiles Trip, 3rd to 10th of March 2018

Dear members,

It’s that time of year again.

In March there are 2 long weekends, being the Labour Day long weekend and Easter.

CAWA usually holds a trip on both of these long weekends, Mt Frankland on the earlier weekend and Peak Charles on the later weekend.

The Peak Charles trip is still going ahead and the event will be posted shortly.

The Mt Frankland trip has in the past few years been a bit hit and miss with the weather because Mt Frankland appears to be a bit of a rain magnet.

Therefore, this year I will be arranging a trip to Arapiles.

Arapiles has been touted as the best climbing cliff in the world.  There are a ton of routes.  There are 3,018 routes listed on the Crag.

Arapiles is mostly Trad climbing and climbers will need to bring a Trad Rack.  CAWA does not provide climbing gear or ropes.

Arapiles is probably not the ideal trip for a complete climbing novice, but there are a range of routes available for all grades and levels.

The trip will commence on Saturday, 3 March 2018 to Saturday, 10 March 2018.

The plan at this stage is for the CAWA team to camp at the Pines camping ground at Arapiles.

There is a small fee payable for camping.

At this stage the plan is to rendezvous in Melbourne on Saturday, 3 March 2018 and travel to Arapiles together.

Alternatively, team members can meet at the Pines during the week.

I am looking at a number of travel options to get from Melbourne to Arapiles, which I shall confirm once I have confirmation as to the rough numbers.

I am hoping that CAWA will be able to make a small contribution on behalf of members towards camping or travelling, but I haven’t confirmed if that will be possible.  So perhaps assume, for the time being, that this won’t happen.

Please note that CAWA trips are a benefit for members. Non-members who are interested in coming with you can join online now (easiest) or prior to the first day of the trip.

All participants need to be ‘independent participants’. This means you are responsible for your own safety. Due to legal and liability issues, CAWA does not provide training. If you are an inexperienced climber then have a chat to some of the more experienced people you know and see if they are planning to attend.

Finally, this trip will be strictly RSVP.  So please e-mail me directly if you are keen and want to register.

As there is quite a bit of planning involved, all RSVPs must be received on or before close of business on Wednesday, 21 February 2018.  To go ahead with the trip, I am hoping to get a minimum group of about 6 to 8 or so people to go on the trip.

If I do not get the requisite numbers, I may not proceed with the trip.  However, I may proceed with the trip if the psych is high.

If the trip does not go ahead because I do not get an interest from members, then I will arrange a trip to Mt Frankland in lieu.  For details of the trip to Mt Frankland I refer you to my previous Blog for the trip to Mt Frankland in October 2017.

Happy climbing and hopefully see you in Arapiles,
