Introduction to Traditional Climbing Workshop – October 2023

Do you want to learn more about traditional climbing, equipment, how to place gear, set up anchors and top ropes, and more?

Join our workshop weekend, “Trad 101”, at Wilyabrup Sea Cliffs (Margaret River).

This workshop is for those with outdoor sport climbing experience looking to delve into traditional climbing. Over the weekend, you’ll learn about trad gear, placements, sport vs. traditional differences in approaching and assessing a route, anchor building, the merits and drawbacks of various top belay methods, and more. Furthermore, you’ll have opportunities to put theory into action under the expert guidance of our seasoned instructors.

What

  • route planning, effective communication
  • and more

Prerequisite

  • must have a gym lead pass
  • must be comfortable climbing grade 16+ on lead outdoors
  • must be comfortable with cleaning sport routes outdoors
  • have your own harness, shoes, helmet, chalk bag, belay device and personal safety (PAS, slings, etc.)

Safety is a number one priority in all our workshops. Those who register but don’t meet the prerequisites above will not be allowed to participate.

Camping

We will be staying at Gracetown Caravan Park. The camping fee from Friday to Sunday is included in the registration fee.

When

The workshop will run on Saturday from 8:30 am – 5 pm. Sunday will be left optional to have some fun and put the new skills into practice.

Further details

All climbers at the event must be independent participants who are entirely responsible for themselves and meet all prerequisites listed above. In addition, following our Public Liability insurance requirements, everyone will need to sign a Deed of Release and Indemnity and fill in a registration form so that the climbing experience can be vetted for the event.

Please note that CAWA workshops are a benefit for members. Non-members interested in coming with you will need to join online and follow up on the registration for the trip beforehand. Furthermore, be aware that the weather is the deciding factor of this event. The trip might be cancelled if the rock is unclimbable. The final decision will be made last Tuesday before the trip.

Refund & Cancellation Policy
Cancellations made seven days or more in advance of the event date will receive a 100% refund. Unless there is an exceptional personal circumstance, a 25% cancellation fee will apply for cancellations made within six days or less. Cancellations are to be mailed to the event organiser. By registering for the event, you agree to these terms.
